Machinist: Replacing cogwheels, ad infinitum.
For the love of God, find a good apprenticeship program! I cannot stress enough how much this can make or break your career, since it will give you all the tools necessary to be a great machinist. Also, working with the metalworking equipment requires both some mental and physical dexterity, so being in decent shape certainly help. Oh, and expect to get your hands dirty. This is not a job for the delicate.

Machinist: The Machinist Trade
To become a machinist, you don’t need a high school diploma, but it definitely helps. Working experience, however, is invaluable. I started my career in Washington as an apprentice at the Honeywell Machinist Plant. They have a great apprenticeship program that runs for roughly four years, and I encourage others to apply if you are in the area. If not, then I’m sure there are other similar programs available around the country.
