Appraiser: Hooray for Divorce, My One Respite

Rating: 5/5 (8 ratings)
Introduction
Getting licensed to be an appraiser is a breeze: you attend a class, it takes a couple of weeks, and then you take a test, which is easy if you paid any attention in the class. The job is to estimate the value of a piece of real estate, assess property tax, confirm that a person has adequate collateral for mortgages, and other such things. I’m not quite a real estate agent and not quite a banker, but somewhere in between the two.

Job Function
Perhaps I’ve a mean streak, I don’t know, but my favorite part of the job is assessing the worth of real estate for the purposes of divorce. It’s fun: the tension is high and the people involved are usually in a fit of bad temper, or crying hysterically. I’ve been able to pick up more than one distraught divorcee, too

Lifestyle
It’s a job—the pay is pretty good, certainly enough to live on, and you get a salary instead of the commission that the real estate agents have to fight for, but it is certainly not the most exciting thing you could do with your life. Are you the settling down type? If so, enjoy.

Additional Information
It’s a growing field, so if you get yourself certified, a job does in fact awate you.
