Automotive Engineer: This Job is not without its Perks
IntroductionI had a bunch of bad jobs in my day, stuff that didn’t pay squat, or if it did, was torturous. So I went to school and learned how to fix cars. I was always something of a “car guy,” but how they worked was still rather elusive to me. As it turns out, though, they’re really not very complicated machines. I like working with my hands, building and repairing things, and with this job I get to do just that…plus, girls get real turned on by the grease beneath my fingernails.
Job FunctionPeople come into the shop I work at, it’s a gas station/garage, with their cars, complaining of a rattle or shaking. I take their car, inspect it, run it and listen, and if necessary I take it for a spin (I find that with expensive cars this is very often necessary) until I can figure out where the problem lies. Then it’s just a matter of fixing it up—getting down underneath the thing and tightening this or replacing that. Of course, some cars need more work than others: sometimes the thing needs a new transmission, and that takes more then just getting down and tightening a bolt, but it’s these big jobs that are fun. The part of the work that sucks is the easy stuff: changing oil, tune-ups, stuff like that; it’s simple, and it keeps the shop in business, but it lacks all the fun that is often part of this job. There’s this one customer who comes in like once a week with a flat tire. How does it even happen that she gets a flat this often? Anyway, she comes in and I have to go change her tire, and she watches over me, like a vulture watches carrion, as if I'm going to mess it up. Even if I were that bad at my job, she wouldn’t know it, ‘cause she certainly doesn’t know how to change a tire.

LifestyleIt’s a job: I show up in the morning, I leave at night. Sometimes something comes up and I’ve got to stay a little late, and sometimes the day is slow and I get to leave a little early. The best part is that I don’t ever have to pay a mechanic. I remember that used to cost me a fortune before I learned how to do it myself.
Additional InformationGet yourself a fancy but broken car, fix it up, and then go cruising for chicks. If that works for you, do you really care whether or not you like your job?
