Graphic Designer: Painting and Perfume Bottles

Rating: 5/5 (82 ratings)
Introduction
Be willing to change. If management or a client gives you feedback on your idea, whether your idea be just a concept or even a visual product, take it and go with it.
And in the long run, if your overall style or approach needs to change for you to be current, grow. The reason the Beatles were so successfully is because they changed as society did, not necessarily in response to it, but they didn't stay stagnant.

Job Function
The best part of it is that it uses my art background. I studied painting in college, and I'm good, but I don't want to have to make a living making fine art. Graphic art is creative, it uses my aesthetic skills, and it keeps me in touch with the world. If you like being completely up to date, you could work for a magazine, but I'd rather work on ads.

The worst time was when I was freelancing and trying to get jobs and clients. And then keeping those clients, persuading them that my ideas were really good, or taking their feedback and working with it. Some clients have good taste, and I even learn something from them. You have to learn everywhere.

Lifestyle
Deadlines can be very demanding. If you have something that needs to be done, you stay until it's done. It doesn't matter what time it is. As far as location, I work at a firm in Manhattan, and I like that I have insurance and a steady job. And it's great to live in New York. You'll do best in this career if you enjoy using your creativity in a variety of capacities. You have to discover what designing does for you as a person, whether it is satisfying or not. If it is, it won't matter so much what you are designing. And as with anything, if you give it everything you have, you'll be prouder of the product and happier in the process.

Additional Information
There's a lot of software out there. The more that you can use well, the better. And it can help to know some things about video production and editing as well.
