Graphic Designer: Quality Creation
IntroductionMany artistic people entering the work force now are eager to express their creativity. Graphic design is a career where you can do this. It isn't always creative, and not all of the projects meet your interests, but the overall capability to have a steady income and regular hours, while using your taste and imagination is good.
Job FunctionThe best part of my job is that it is steady, with regular hours and insurance. That is not an easy thing to accomplish in the arts. Actors don't really have the equivalent of a career like "graphic designer." You could say that acting in a TV commercial is a correlation, but that's a pretty rare gig to get, and it certainly isn't a full-time or long-term assignment. I, on the other hand, will be working as long as there are logos to be designed.
I also like the office culture. I've spend a lot of time alone working on my own art, and this position puts me around other people. Although, sometimes I feel like breaking through the window and parachuting out onto Madison Avenue.
The worst part is dealing with the desire to be spending more time on my own art. But I have a decent balance that I'm pretty happy with.
The worst part is that the projects aren't always fascinating.

LifestyleThe hours are regular. I've worked at the same office for two years. The best kind of person for this career is someone who is a team player and isn't touchy. It's hard, but you have to take criticism. And you have to be confident. Throw your ideas out there and see what happens. Virgil said, "Fortune favors the bold." And he was right. (Don't ask me how I know that.)
