Firefighter: Becoming a Firefighter - the basics
Rating: 2.1/5 (34 ratings)
IntroductionThe public in general holds firefighters in extremely high esteem. That can be alluring, but this job is not for everyone. It's physically demanding and requires your customer service on potentially the worst day of a person's life. Do your homework and get your hands dirty before considering this as a career. One of the best ways to do this is volunteer at your local fire station. This will give you a feel for the job and provide you with the necessary training to begin your career. If you are serious about obtaining a position, apply to as many fire departments as possible. Play the odds - The more tests and interviews you go to the better your skills will become and the more chances you will have to get hired. Don't be discouraged if you don't get in on your first or second try. It took me 8 tests over 2 years to become a career firefighter. I know guys that have tested for 5 years and still don't have a job. This is an extremely competitive gig to land so keep your head up and KEEP TESTING!
Job FunctionSince I was just recently hired, I am currently going through recruit academy. This is a 3 month school of sorts that teaches you the basics of how to preform the necessary functions of a firefighter. It is the most demanding (physically and mentally) thing I have ever done in my life and requires a huge commitment. However, my volunteer firefighting experience lets me know that once it's over the best job in the world awaits. Pros - working 8 days a month, staying physically active, helping someone on the worst day of their life, working as part of a diverse team, and having pride and passion for the job. Cons - It can be dangerous (you do go into burning buildings), dealing with death/loss and seeing some unsettling things involving the human anatomy.

LifestyleThis job is great for time off. Working 8 days a month leaves room for travel, family, hobbies, a second job or whatever you're into. However, when you're on shift you need to be on you're "A" game. Lives depend on it. Punctuality, discipline, teamwork, creative thinking, mechanical aptitude, being physically fit, attention to detail and a systematic method of problem solving under extreme pressure are all great skills/traits for this job.
Additional InformationOne more thing - As a firefighter you represent yourself, your fire department and all fire departments when you are ON and OFF the clock. We are a family and poor decisions hurt our reputation with the public. This can take years to repair. Make smart choices and treat others the way you want to be treated.
