Health Care Informatic: Financial Counselor for Physician Clinics
IntroductionI think the biggest piece of advice would be to remain open minded and willing to learn. The more you can observe the better you will be able to assist your patients and doctors.
Job FunctionI believe that the best thing about my job is making things run efficiently. The better I am at assisting the patient with their bill or the doctor/clinic with their billing and coding, the more efficiently the whole machine can run. If a clinic/doctor's office runs smoothly, the patients are better served and happier. If a patient is treated with respect and has fewer problems with their billing issues, the practice will be better off.
I think my least favorite part of my job is dealing with the insurance aspects of billing. Insurance companies are inconsistent and a necessary evil, for the most part, so they tend to complicate the flow.
LifestyleI put in my standard 40 hours a week and yet am willing to do extra when it is needed. Our office has flex-time, and that makes it very nice when you have an appointment or family issue needing to be dealt with. Here in Iowa, this winter, it came in handy with weather-related delays or the need to leave early because of incoming weather.
I feel someone who can be self disciplined and someone who has a good strong work ethic can do well in this career. You need to keep yourself organized to most efficiently handle your clinics/doctors.
Additional InformationI truly like what I do. It helps people and it's not so stressful that I can't sleep at night. I used to own my own business and I never got away. Even if I physically was not at the office I was almost always mentally there. I enjoy being able to do my job and do it well and know that others are positively impacted by that.
