Journalist: "Journalist writes riveting review, Gets all the Ladies!" End Quote.

IntroductionSensationalism. Oh, how I love thee. That's my job: to get the facts and report them to you in a eye-catching and engaging manner. Your first obligation to your readers, of course, is accurately presenting the facts. Keep lots of notes whenever you are covering a beat, and be respectful to your contacts. They are an invaluable asset to any journalist. The more contacts you have, the better. Anything and everything can be a news story, so always keep an eye out for potential stories. Being a journalist doesn't require any major formal training beyond a Bachelor's degree, but a Master's in Journalism does help. A good journalism school, like Columbia University's, can supply you with tons of clips and interning experience at local papers. That said, in the age of blogging, anyone can be a civic journalist and report on anything.
Job FunctionWorking my beats are fun. For example, when I'm covering a concert for a music review, it's half-work and half-play. Plus, you meet some extremely interesting people. I love to write, and I certainly have a flair for the dramatic. The more I can hype something and dress it up, the better. "Journalist reveals secrets of his trade, Gets Award for Sensationalism!" End quote. Love it. What I don't like is working with strict editors-in-chief and staying in the office. I like being out in the streets getting scoops!

LifestyleLots of work, because you are only as good as your stories and beats. But, there is room for lots of play too, especially if you are covering something you love. I work in entertainment, so going to concerts and interviewing musicians can be fun. You have to be aggressive to get your stories, though, so if you are a passive person you are going to have a tough time. The competition is fierce out there. Keep it in mind!
