Producer/Musician: Blunderbuss Archetypical Perfection
IntroductionMake cool and interesting music. I'm going to address self-produced, self-distributed freelance stuff: If you're making pop songs or something else which is rather ordinary, then this "do it yourself" approach might not be the way to go. The weirder, the better: that's what people want from home made bands; and besides, there's already a real market for mainstream kinds of music.
Job FunctionRecording equipment rules: for about $700 you can set yourself up with some quality digital equipment, and then all you need are instruments, which can be borrowed if necessary. I wake up and drink coffee until I can't see straight and then record whatever comes to mind, using multiple tracks to layer the music. Since my vocal talent is miserable, I drink a whole lot of milk and smoke tons of cigarettes, and then either scream or make some silly voices. Some great material comes from this, but one needs to discriminate, 'cause a lot of crap gets made in the process, too.
LifestyleWell, I need to have a job...Blunderbuss has not yet reached a level where I can survive on it, but when I'm in need of a couple bucks I can go out and sell a few CDs on the street (college campus and rock shows are the best markets). It is all work, but making music is fun work, and the only part that sucks is trying to peddle the albums to strangers: You really have to talk yourself up.
Additional InformationBlunderbuss is the coolest one man band ever: if your ever in New York and you see some twenty-something with an absurd mustache, that's me: ask for a Blunderbuss CD, and I promise it shan't disappoint (well, it will probably disappoint you, but I'll feel pretty good.)
