Priest: Saviors of Humanity
Introduction“In any parish, the priest’s ministry is to build a community of faith, of truly faith-filled people. It is there that they encounter the living Jesus in the Scriptures, in the Sacraments, in the whole prayer-life of the community, and in their fellow parishioners. Parish unity is not meant to be just a cosy [sic] fellowship: it is to be a communion of faith and witness. The parish is supposed to be a servant community, a community for others. In other words, it is meant to be a small-scale version of all that the Church is called to be.”*

LifestyleWhen I was a young man I was a heathen, I was a criminal and a vagabond. I denounced Christ on a daily basis; I stole; I killed, for to kill in one’s heart, in one’s soul, is to kill in actuality; I coveted every person and thing I saw. I wallowed in vice and sin, and I spent time in prison for my impiety—yes, for my impiety, not my crimes! It was in prison that I met the chaplain, and I feel shame even now for the things I said to him the first times we met. But he was persistent, he would not allow Satan to have my soul, and eventually I started to listen to his magnificent words. I was in prison because God sent me to prison; His hand came down and snatched me up, putting me into a deep darkness, like Jonah, so that I might see His light. And God’s will be done! I was saved, and now I stand before you, me, who once kept company with prostitutes and thieves, who filled his veins with narcotics, me, who killed every day in his soul, thereby killing his soul, me, a priest! I stand before you all just as the prison chaplain once stood before me, asking you to join me in the love of Him, to repent of your sins and give yourself, body, mind and soul, to our God.
Additional InformationDoctors, they will tell you that they have the most rewarding job in the world because they save lives. Saving a life is nothing when compared to saving a soul.
