Social Worker: Guidance for your Life!
IntroductionThe most important thing to remember is that this is a "people" job. So, if you aren't a people person, then you might want to reconsider the field. Secondly, the requirements to become a full-fledged social worker are rather strict/high. Academically, you need a Master's degree in Social Work to even treat and counsel others. Anything less will leave you doing solely clerical work for real social workers. If you fancy yourself becoming a boss/director, then a Ph.D is a must. On top of this, every state has strict requirements for acquiring licenses to practice, and some jobs may require additional certifications that can be acquired from the National Association of Social Workers. Long story short: expect a long hard road before you can become a Social Worker.
Job FunctionI think the best part of my day is meeting new clients and helping them. To say it is extremely satisfying would be a gross understatement. Every social worker lives to help and counsel others with any problem they may have, so naturally, this is going to be the highlight of your day. The worst part is hearing some of the horror stories that some people have and not being able to help them further. Trust me, it hurts hearing a woman talk about her spousal abuse and sending her home right after the appointment ends. You cannot help but feel as though you are sending her back to certain doom.

LifestyleYou typically work 9-to-5 but staying past five is pretty common to finish up paperwork and such. As far as locations go, your options are pretty open. Social Work is required everywhere, so the world is your oyster. In terms of personality, I think you need to be a genuinely compassionate person and born-philanthropist.
Additional InformationThe work is extremely rewarding and worth all the academic hurdles you have to go through to do it.
