Why you might want to go somewhere other than Auburn University

Rating: 2.1/5 (32 ratings)
Introduction
Going to Auburn is a kind of like getting a dick in the ear... it sounds intriguing at first, but it's going to be nothing but a headache! Be prepared to spend your first two years here in classes of up to 300 people. Auburn does have a good science and engineering department, and if you're looking for that special someone you'd be hard pressed to find a campus with more good-looking people. With that being said, Auburn is a research university which means that professors are not concerned about you. They do not care... period. If you enjoy having a relationship with your instructors you should probably look somewhere else.

Campus Life and Social Life
The best aspect of Auburn would have to be the laid back atmosphere. Studying can eat up as much time as you let it, but varies largely on what your major is (Engineers spend the most time studying, Business majors the least). In the fall, home football games are almost a religious experience, and absences from them will be met with stares of incredulity. Greek life is moderate, about 10% of the campus, so if that's your thing it's there for you, but if you despise most greeks then you can still avoid them for the most part. There are also plenty of extracuriccular activities for those who are so inclined. Freshman Forum is an especially good way to meet people if you're new to the campus. The spring is completely boring, but Atlanta is only an hour and a half away, so there are plenty of good concerts and sporting events close by.

Academics
Studying depends largely on your major... Engineers spend a lot of time doing it and Business majors spend a lot of time, well, not doing it. The English and Philosophy departments suck since their only concern is how much more important and enlightening their particular field of study is, so expect to do poorly if you're in another major. As far as professors go, Auburn is a research university. This means that you are going to be last on the professors' list of concerns. Do not expect a great deal from them outside of the classroom. They are available during scheduled office hours, but you will be made to feel that you are inconveniencing them so proceed at your own risk.

Student Body
The majority of students are from in-state, and it is not uncommon for someone to go to Auburn simply because their parents went there. Auburn students are a diverse crowd and accepting of most people, but it does have a significant conservative bent. There are still some tensions with the gay and lesbian communities as well as the occasional race relation problem, but these are few and far between and are not representative of the larger Auburn student body. Southern hospitality takes on new meaning here, where anyone can walk up to a tailgating spot and be welcomed like old family. On the weekends there are a few bars downtown that most of the over-21 crowd congregates at. The music scene is mostly cover bands so don't expect much in the way of orginial music.

In Closing...
The administration here is a joke. There is always construction going on which makes an otherwise beautiful campus look like downtown Baghdad, and parking is god-awful. If I could get away with it I'd melt down the great Auburn seal, which sits in front of Langdon Hall, and turn it into a scuplture... of a BIG dick in the ear!
