BS University
IntroductionOh where to begin...but I'll try to make this short since most people aren't big readers, lol. I am an Education Major at Ball State in Muncie, Indiana and I have come to learn that the Teacher's College especially does not care about the students' needs. For example, you literally have to tell a student, "I'm sorry I can't meet with you after school today because I have all this other work [busy work that does not help my career] to do." And that makes me so unbelievably angry. Their values are not to help the students, and having only one semester of student teaching left I may be making myself go thru with it, only to be an un-proud graduate of BSU. Other than the Teacher's College, Ball State communication-wise is a mess. No one seems to know anything, and the several people who you get transfered to do not know how to help you. Now please do not get me wrong, when I started here and started with the Education classes (which teach nothing, more theories than hands on ideas you NEED to be a good teacher), I was positive and ready to learn. I in no way had a negative outlook on BSU or the classes. One of my regrets is coming to BSU and another is majoring in Education. Although you may hear BSU is a great school if you want to be a teacher, many friends and I have confirmed that is NOT the truth.
Campus Life and Social LifeSocially BSU isn't that bad. I don't like the fact that the administrators ponder why there are so many freshman drop-outs when they MAKE students live in the dorms their first year, who are living for the first time on their own in a tiny room with someone else. But through Ball State I have met many best friends who I have kept in touch with and hopefully always will...it seems like when you meet someone, you meet their friends and then you have a party from time to time, if you'd like to go and if not that's ok too. People seem open and want to have friends, and it makes campus life easier.

AcademicsI pretty much explained that in the first section...being completely honest I have had 2 professors that I have learned from, having almost completed my time here. One was French Composition, and the other was Acting 101. Workload is a lot of busy work (with the exceptions of the classes I mentioned above) which does not help you gain expertise in your field. Like I said, the Teacher's College is worthless, and I've also heard that the Psychology Department is not a good department either. I have heard that Counseling Psychology is a quite good program, and that is another regret...that I wish I had gone into that instead of teaching. They seem to really care and have an amazing staff and faculty.
Student BodyI'm not sure where they are from, but most seem very open-minded and ready to learn, and have a good time in the process. It becomes discouraging though, when you meet someone in class for the first time commenting on how much of a waste of time this particular class is, and how not only is it not helping you, but this is a class that needs to be taught differently and correctly because you do need this information (such as Classroom Manangement...my friends and I really needed that class to learn how to control kids, and ended up learning nothing, but receiving an A).
In Closing...I don't want people to make the same mistakes my friends and I did. Three of my best friends are education majors and are quickly looking to get out of it, which does not motivate me to finish student teaching. Select a different school, and even if you aren't happy there, still try to be optimistic although unreleased anger may occur.
