Uptown Girls
IntroductionIt's New York City! What more do you want? Barnard is a small school within Columbia University that gives you a "sense of community" in this crazy town. The academics will challenge you, as will your peers and surrounding community. If you make it here, NOTHING can stop you. If you don't like New York, do yourself a favor and don't come. The city is all over you. You get used to listening to your professor's voice fighting over car horns, drills, and sirens outside...and that's just the beginning. But that's part of the best things that you will gain from studying here. Students at Barnard and Columbia are clever, sharp, savvy, and ready to conquer the world!
Campus Life and Social LifeSocial life: Since this is a Women's college, you must make the extra effort to meet guys. They won't be on your hall, and if you're taking a class at Barnard, you will be one of 20 girls in a class with 2 guys. No worries, though, they'll be there...you'll meet them as you join that theater group, dance troupe, intramural sport, etc. Or at the many bars around campus.
Barnard/Columbia sports suck. But there are a lot of opportunities to join club teams and intramural leagues. There's a club for EVERYTHING IMAGINABLE. And if there isn't, you can make up your own. Weekends are great. You have a shitload of work to do, but there are over 50 museums to visit, 26,000 restaurants to try, 30,000 clubs and bars to party in, and amazing people to meet right down your hall.

AcademicsThe academics here rock. AWESOME DEPARTMENTS INCLUD: Architecture, Art History, Dance, Psychology, and Chemistry, to name just a few. Professors, faculty, and advisors are so accessible and there to support. But yeah, the workload is ridiculous. You're never done.
Student BodyThe students here are, generally, competitive and well-rounded. We don't have that many international students, but probably more than at any other Women's liberal arts school. I really cannot describe the "typical" student because there is no such generalization to be made. There are people from all over the world, from Italy to Honduras to Japan to Argentina...all people with different beliefs, religions, customs and traditions with one thing in common: they all come together to dive into a new experience of learning, facing new challenges, and exploring ways of bettering themselves.
In Closing...This is the best Women's liberal arts school, in one of the greatest universities in the world, in the best city of the world. Seriously, what more could you ask for?
