Beloit College

Rating: 3/5 (53 ratings)
Introduction
Beloit is a close-knit community, which has its good and bad points. On the upside, the classes are small and the teaching personalized, and the student body is familiar and social with one another. The downside is that there's something of a bubble here: since students live, work, and spend all free time on campus, you can start to feel slightly cut off from the world after a couple of years. But the communal aspect is more fun than claustrophobic, in general.

Campus Life and Social Life
There are many parties every weekend and they are everything a movie like "Road Trip" advertises college to be. Think people grinding to Jay Z and spilling beer on each other...and I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way. It can be fun in small doses. Just don't expect to have any deep discussions over the punch bowl. As for other social outlets, the small, intimate environment of the school is ideal for hanging out with friends, watching movies, generally enjoying downtime, and exploring the community. There's a farmers' market every fall in town...

Academics
Beloit is very diverse academically. Many students pursue double majors or a major and several minors, and almost everyone I've met is thrilled with the quality of academics. One exception is journalism and business, where the school totally falls short (so if that's your thing...look elsewhere). The professors are, on the whole, excellent and accessible and occasionally, cheesy as it sounds, inspiring.

Having said that, like most colleges the professor community here runs the gamut from amazing and energetic to old/senile types that can't be fired due to the curse of tenure...it just takes a little effort to find the gems and be ruthless about not settling for a professor you're not learning from.

Student Body
Most of our student body comes from Illinois, but in every respect besides geographical it's a pretty diverse group of kids. The largest club on campus is the Beloit Science Fiction and Fantasy Association, but by no means is this intended as a larger statement about everyone on campus being a Fantasy Geek (by the way, if you think loving fantasy makes you a geek, keep it to yourself in public here or you might get your ass kicked). Beloit is also a great frisbee campus.

In Closing...
Beloit's a wonderful school: close and communal with great academics and an interesting social scene. In short, everything a smallish college is supposed to be and more.
