Invent Yourself
IntroductionYears ago, the Beloit motto was "Invent Yourself." That's pretty much Beloit in a nutshell: this is a great Liberal Arts environment in which academics, extracurriculars, and campus resources (like the annual student government budget of $250,000) all serve the individual student's process of discovering what he or she wants to do and pursuing it in a supportive environment.
In my case, I'm an entrepreneur, and just attended two entrepreneurial conferences - one in Orlando, Florida and one in Las Vegas - with friends from the program.
But even for kids who have one passion that trumps all others...what's great about Beloit is that they don't try to label you. They encourage you to diversify your life and broaden horizons. Think: jocks in musicals, economists in rock bands...you really get to explore and create your identity here.
Campus Life and Social LifeSocial life here is ideal because EVERYONE (about 90%, I would estimate) lives and stays on-campus during the weekends. There are a zillion clubs and activities with events at all times, and the Student Activities Center provides weekly trips/rides to local stores for students looking to escape campus. That said, the city of Beloit isn't much to behold...it's small and run-down. But it's on the upswing, with a new riverside park and citywide efforts to make it a pleasant atmosphere.
But never fear. If you want to escape the gates of campus and wander in a genuinely exciting city, Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison are close enough for quick day-trips.

AcademicsAnthropology is a nationally recognized department here. PROOF: the character of Indiana Jones was based on a professor here named Roy Andrews.
Professors are pretty much all Doctors in their field. We have close relationships with faculty, call them by their first names, and are often invited to their homes for Sunday Dinners.
TA's never teach classes, but are avaiable for tutoring.
Student BodyThe "typical" student at Beloit is socially and politically liberal. Having said that, I am a conservative student. But I don't feel like this is a hostile environment for me, since everyone approaches discussions from a place of intelligence and respect and I believe challenging your own personal views is an important part of discovering and defending who you are and what you believe. So it's all good. As the motto says, students here are pretty much free to be themselves.
Demographics-wise: we have a large international student population and about 70% of my class has studied abroad. An International education is encouraged here, which is just another example of how openminded the student body is.
In Closing...nope.
