A Big Pleasant Pond
IntroductionIf you're looking to immerse yourself in the city of Boston (or at least a strip of Comm. Ave.) this is for you. The numbers are a bit overwhelming and BU students basically control a good one-third of Commonwealth Ave., making it easy to blend in with the other 30,000 students. I chose BU for the photojournalism department, and the College of Communication, which is highly regarded. If you're looking for a tight-knit community where friendly/familiar faces are always within sight, don't come here.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe bars and clubs in Boston are great...quite plentiful, in fact. With the numbers it's always easy to find a small dive to bring the party to, or on the contrary, find a good spot packed from front to back.
The parties are rather typical: kegs, kegs, kegs. There is lots of screaming drunk girls and ever-predictable drop-in by the BU Police or Boston PD.
AcademicsThe workload is dependent on your major. As a photo major and an active member of the BU Free Press, I am constantly shooting and taking on assignments. The classes are pretty basic: there are typically two midterms and a final, and those grades combined compose your final grade. If you fall behind, you're screwed. I take notes on everything because it's not very easy to meet people in large lecture classes. You're likely to sit next to someone new virtually every class!
Student BodyThe typical student at BU is white and comes from a well-to-do family. From what I've encoutered, they usually are from New Hampshire, New Jersey, or Connecticut. This seems like the place to be for East Coast kids. I'm from Los Angeles and I haven't met a single person from there - quite rare, as it is the second largest city in the U.S.
In Closing...It's cold...like, really cold.
If that doesn't bother you, jump on board.
