Boston Rocks

IntroductionI grew up in NY and I kind of wanted to come back to the Northeastern area of the United States, so that’s why I chose to come to BU. Also, I wanted a city environment. And I liked the city environment that BU has. I think the dorms are a good experience- you get to know all the other freshmen right away just by standing out in this yard. So I think living in the dorms is just a good social thing to help you to meet people. I think it’s also part of the college experience. They don’t have freshman-specific dorms, but all freshmen are required to live in dorms. There are a few exceptions, but they’re pretty difficult to get, so most freshmen live in the dorms. It’s just a good place to meet all the other freshmen. The food here is great. I mean any place you eat, I think they’re going to have to repeat what they prepare sometimes. But overall it’s pretty good food. I’ve been to some other universities and I think that our food compares pretty well with the best of the dorm food out there.
Campus Life and Social LifeWe don’t have a football team at BU. The soccer team did well this year though. They made it to the America East finals. The Lacrosse and Field Hockey teams did well also. It’s kind of annoying in the morning when you have to wake up and hear the loudspeaker playing, but other than that, it’s good for school spirit. I think it’s pretty easy to make friends. The first week I just stood out in the courtyard and as people came by I just introduced myself, said, “Hey, I’m Akeem.” And even if you’re not that outgoing, there are plenty of social events you can go to. The RA’s organize events with all of the people on your floor. There are also always events at the George Sherman Union down the street where you can meet people. It’s pretty difficult to party in the dorms. The RA’s are generally pretty strict about noise complaints. You can’t make too much noise and you can’t have alcohol in the dorms.
AcademicsMy favorite thing about BU is the city environment- I like being in the city. There’s also easy access to all the other schools around Boston like Northeastern, Harvard, MIT, and Boston College. It is nice being in Boston with other college students. They try to have a lot of networking between the colleges. For example, they will post an event at BC, and everyone from BU, MIT and Harvard is invited and will most likely come. I think it’s pretty easy to meet people from other schools. My least favorite thing about BU is being so far away from home. I don’t always get to go home for Thanksgiving or Spring Break, usually just Christmas and summer vacation.
Student BodyYou can have a car on campus, but I don’t think it’s worth it because it is expensive and finding parking can be difficult. However, BU has the T System, which is great, and there is good bussing, and many taxis available. The transportation options are pretty good, even if you don’t have a car. BU is a great place because of the city environment that it provides, the friendliness of the people, and the academic reputation of the school. BU is a strong school, and we have one of the top communication programs in the nation.
Academics are challenging, and it takes some getting used to, especially in the first week when it is hectic because its many people’s first week away from home. Without mom and dad there, everyone wants to go crazy. After the first test you realize that you have to get some studying done if you want to stay at BU. I think the typical BU student probably studies during the week, maybe goes to class will come home, take a little break, maybe hit the gym for a little while, do some more studying, eat dinner or whatever, just study during the week, maybe relax on the weekends go to a few parties and that’s it.
