BG in a Nutshell

Rating: 3/5 (36 ratings)
Introduction
I decided to attend Bowling Green State University because they're known for their great Education program and I got a positive vibe from the people on campus. Be prepared to meet a lot of future teachers at BG. It's definitely a college town, and yes, there is a grave yard in the campus.

Bowling Green is surrounded by farms and cornfields, so don't expect to see any skyscrapers there. Hockey is a big deal as well as greek life. People at BG are all about being involved in the "campus community".

Campus Life and Social Life
Greek life pretty much runs the party scene at BG. You don't have to be in a sorority or fraternity to find the best parties but it definitely helps to know some people that are. The quaint downtown in BG suprisingly has a good number of bars and dance clubs; some for 18 and up and others only 21 and up. Football season is a good time but people get even more into hockey. It's definitely a big thing at BG.

Clubs are an important part of the college and there's an organization to fit anyone's interest. "Dance Marathon" is the largest organization on campus and has been the biggest marathon in Ohio for the past few years. I'd say that at least half of the student body is involved in DM in some way. BG also has a ton of living/learning communities that mostly benefit first year students.
Academics
The education department is well known for it's amazing preparatory programs. The sciences are also considerably demanding with knowledgeable professors. The music majors think pretty highly of themselves, and get a reputation for being a little snooty about it. I don't know a whole lot about the other colleges.

Our art students get many opportunities to display their work at shows and in the student union. I wasn't impressed with my English classes and I heard the dance program leaves a lot to be desired. The one thing BG does well is offering a lot of academic help. There is the writing skills center, math lab, and plenty of group study sessions with tutors to help anyone that needs it.

Student Body
The students at BG don't really dress up for class, unless they're student teaching. There's a variety of people and everyone is generally accepting of others' appearances. We get a lot of people from small towns or in Michigan.

The students at BG are really involved in the campus community. There are a bunch of different sororities and fraternities that break the "dumb blond/jock" stereotype. There's also a ton of volunteer and activist organizations. People also join intramural sports and can also start their own clubs.

The happiest people here are the ones that take an active role in campus involvement, because it's the best way to get to know a lot of extremely nice and caring people.

In Closing...
Bowling Green is rural. You'll meet a good number of kids from farm towns and a lot of future teachers. The best way to feel at home in BG is to get involved on campus in some way and to go to the hockey games. Anyone who's not too concerned about dressing up for class and likes to meet nice, smiley people will like attending BG. Just be prepared for the wind... it's harsh all year.
