A Great School
IntroductionYou can really just get a flavor of a lot of different concentrations while also, just staying focused on what you need to do for your major. You just have a certain quota of classes that you have to pass before you graduate—I think it’s 32 classes you have to pass before you graduate—so when you fail, it doesn’t affect your GPA; when you pass, if you just get a pass in a pass/fail course, it doesn’t sway your GPA in either direction, but it’s just another credit that you’ve earned and so you’re on your way to getting your degree basically.
Campus Life and Social LifeI have a really close-knit dorm. I think we all got to know each other really well in the beginning, in orientation the first few weeks or first couple months even, of freshman year. And my dorm, I couldn’t have been happier with the kids that are in my dorm with me, a variety of all different kinds of people, but all really nice and really easy to live with. Most people come in on 21 meals, or 20 meals a week, I think. It’s 3 meals a day except on Sunday you get two meals. A lot of kids opt to just do 10 meals a week and get the rest of their food on Thayer Street or just around, because there is really good food within walking distance, right on College Hill. Right now, my one main extra curricular is squash. I’m on the Varsity Squash team. And that’s just been an awesome experience.
AcademicsParty scene is great. Brown is definitely very social. It’s not based on any one institution of partying. It’s not just Frats, not just bars but it’s pretty much everything. From my experience, underage drinking is just about as easy as it is anywhere in the Universe. Not to say that every night is a night of debauchery for young people, I’m just saying it’s pretty easy to go out and party. As long as you’re college age, it’s not a big deal. Kids smoke pot, that’s basically what happens. You don’t go to parties and kids are doing lines of coke or anything sketchy like that. It’s pretty UN-sketchy, I’d day, on the drug front.
Student BodyKids are not as in your face as I thought- as I was prepared for coming to Brown. I was expecting worse, actually. Not necessarily worse, I don’t really care—liberal or conservative or otherwise—but I’m not really a huge fan of having political views thrust in my face all the time and it’s really not like that here. I don’t think that there’s an exorbitant amount of school spirit at Brown, compared to other schools. The turnouts for the games aren’t incredibly good. I think it’s pretty stingy in the admissions office as far as letting kids in on sports alone, so that’s obviously going to be reflected in how we perform in the athletic field. I have yet to meet an unintelligent person at Brown and I think that’s really a huge factor. You know people that are smart and have fun—it’s a pretty good environment, I think. It’s just the greatest place to be.
