A Very Liberal Ivy
IntroductionThere are no required classes- our open curriculum here is probably one of the best parts about Brown. I didn’t realize that until I came here and I never had to take a math class again! But it allows you to take just whatever you want. Most students don’t just take classes in one department. Usually that freedom makes students want to try more things. Even though I’ve never taken a math class except for Statistics, I’ve tried a whole bunch of different things I never thought I would try, like geology classes, physics classes, an astronomy class, an English class. Even though these are not required for my major, it’s been really nice to be able to have that freedom. You can totally take all your classes pass/fail if you wanted to.
Campus Life and Social LifeI thought I’d come to this school and there would be hippies running around. No, this school is a pretty liberal campus. I feel that there are different groups within the campus, so there’s a mix of everyone. I wouldn’t say there are too many preppy kids. There definitely is that group of preppy kids, but with a pretty relaxed clothing style I think. When I look around I don’t see any particular style- maybe slightly more toward the hippy style is more of the general, I think.

AcademicsIt’s great. You get a chance to finally live in a house and deal with the bills and deal with cleaning up your own bathroom. And you have a kitchen. It’s a different feel from living on-campus. You feel a lot more removed from the school, which is sometimes good, sometimes bad. It’s slightly further without being too far. I like it a lot better because my room is huge and I get to have a bigger bed. If you had housing in campus you would probably have one of those little beds and a little room and not much space, so that’s nice. A lot of people move off-campus their senior year.
