Brown Finds A Space For Everyone

Rating: 1/5 (85 ratings)
Introduction
When thinking about going to Brown, you should take a good hard look at yourself and say, "Am I werid?" If so proceed and ask yourself, "Am I proud of my weirdness?" if you answered yes to both questions than fill out an application for Brown ASAP. Seriously, though Brown is a great place for everyone and it is the most tolerant Ivy both socially and acamdemically. Nevertheless, I would say it's very important to have a vision of yourself and what you would like to get out of college. Because there are far too many people who use Brown's lack of requirements to take the easy way out and not face life.

Personally, I chose Brown because it offered the best mix of quality of life and academic prestige. In other words, I knew I would be at school with a lot of interesting people who would be fun to hang out with. I also knew that at the end of four years I would have a degree that would impress people. (Shallow? Absolutely, but all these schools cost a 120g's; so for that much cash you better get yourself some prestige because those first few years in the work world are not much fun.)

Campus Life and Social Life
Socially, the campus is great people are friendly and eager to make friends especially freshman year. I would definitely be very careful to make good friends your freshman year because it is tougher to do so later. There are always lots of parties every weekend you can find a dorm party or a house party. In terms of large scale frat parties Brown cannot really compare to most larger schools. In fact the frat parties at Brown look like what you would picture in a movie that was poking fun at frats. Lots of beefy guys looking around for chicks to score with and not that many of those. Or on the other hand a bunch of rather nerdy looking guys who were anxiously awaiting the moment they could leave the party to go back to their room and play video games and jerk off.
Academics
Academically, Brown is completely a mixed bag. Some departments are excellent such as Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Biology Science (notice a pattern here?) Yes, it's true Brown for all it's fluffy-ness is very, very strong in the hard sciences and engineering. They have great professors and excellent facilities. In fact, their big expansion is in the area of life sciences. That is not to say that humanities are given the short shrift, it's just that in this writer's opinion... they totally are. Of course what's a rule without a few exceptions, I'd say the American History department is very good, and some poly. sci classes are good. But overall, I was not too impressed with Brown academically. I thought it did not challenge you unless you went out there and said I really want to be challenged and then you found someone to throw you into a hard core science class.

Student Body
Ok, Brown combines everything any standard school would be plus an x-factor of eccentric weirdness. Let me explain, at any school like and including Brown you would find the following characters: The rich trust fund baby from NYC who doesn't really care about anyone but themselves even though they pretend to care about other rich trust fund babies and social causes while they are at Brown. (15%) The Athletes, actually as I write this I have to chuckle because I really felt sorry for those guys, no it's worse, it's like every evil wish I had towards popular atheletes in highschool is totally granted by Brown. They are relegated to only hanging out with each other. No one except other athelets think they are cool and their fraternties get kicked off campus. SCORE! (15%) Then there are the brainiacs super smart kids who also only hang out with themselves. They totally add to the prestige of the school and if they invent cool stuff they help with the endowment. (Ironically, the biggest donor is the guy who invented Grey Goose vodka hey at least Brown grads are getting people drunk in style. (15%) The laid back kids from Cali, these are those people that add a certain amount of cool factor to the school They are actually chill and pretty fun to hang out with. They take their classes seriously, but not too seriously. Usually they are econ/poli sci majors. (20%) Like I said before that is 45% of the campus that is pretty standard throughout various schools however the other 55% is unique to Brown.
First group is the international kids. These are the kids that come from other countries usually with boatloads of cash. Many of them are totally obnoxious and think the rules don't apply to them. Unfortunately, they tend to be right about that and are able to get away with murder. Fortunately, for normal brown kids you will rarely see them becaus they tend to hang out with each other exclusively, and move in together as soon as possible. (15%) Then you have the crazy hippies. These are the people that are a football field left of center. They, like the international kids tend to only hang out with each other and hold the rest of the world in utter contempt. It's just too bad they are not nearly as good looking as the international kids. Anyway, they also protest just about everying and are annoying. But, I suppose they add "character to the school" But they are just as likely to drop the facade when they graudate and become investment bankers as the rest of us.

In Closing...
Generally speaking Brown is an amazing place to spend four years. No let me rephrase, for the right person it can literally be heaven on earth. People are smart, friendly and somewhat attractive. If you're a girl it's probably really easy to get laid, if you're a guy well it's not. But hey at least that is one way Brown will prepare you for the real world. Because beside that it will keep you blissfully ignorant of all practical things such as deadlines, requiremnents, and grades.
