Depends on Your Scene

Rating: 3/5 (65 ratings)
Introduction
At Brown, there are required classes for your majors. So in order to fulfill a major, you need a certain amount of classes or types of classes, for whatever that major requires. But in general, it allows you to explore things that you may or may not be interested in. You’re not restricted to a freshmen core, per se, or even a sophomore core. In a lot of schools, bigger state schools, you wouldn’t start your major until sophomore year. Whereas I’ve had the opportunity to take quite a few history classes already. It allows you to kind of figure out what you’re interested in at an early stage and really pursue what you’re interested in.

Greek life is not dominant here by any means. It’s kind of a nice alternative.

They don’t crack down too much on partying in the dorms so kids can always have a good time regardless of where they live.

Campus Life and Social Life
We do all right. The girls are pretty and you find at Brown, all the kids are unique and not the drop dead stereotypical blond bombshell. But they’re pretty and everyone’s got something unique to them here. Not too many people date at Brown, surprisingly enough. I think you find a mixture- it just depends on what scene you’re into.
Academics
Brown is definitely a left-sided school. Many of the kids are liberal, you will find both sides. I think people are just opinionated in general. You do find a wide range. Anywhere from very staunch conservatives to socialists are here.

Student Body
Providence is a great town. Thayer Street is a commercial district in the middle of a residential neighborhood that could use some work, but it is a fun spot and there are plenty of things to do. There are bars, lots of food, lots of restaurants, candy shops, clothing stores, consignment shops. There a really a wide array of stores on Thayer Street.

In Closing...
My favorite thing about Brown is the people. I think everyone has something cool to offer. And I think that everybody’s outgoing, which is unique at a college. I found the transition from High School to Brown very easy because people are willing to show you a good time, or willing to hang out with you and make friends. The athletic facilities would be my largest complaint.

I think Brown distinguishes itself by the type of people that it draws. Everybody has something cool and unique to offer. So if you’re looking for diversity and looking for something new, all different sorts of people, then Brown is the place for you.

I don’t have any complaints about the academics…All the professors teach their own classes. It’s not until you get into the much larger science and math classes that you’re going to get TA’s teaching the class or the lectures. So there’s a lot of interaction with the professors and the history department is very strong here.

I’m actually pretty content with Brown. I don’t have any serious complaints at this point.
