A Senior's Perspective

Rating: 5/5 (65 ratings)
Introduction
The biggest piece of advice is: talk to the students at the college you are interested in, especially your major. If you are looking for professors to be in their offices all the time, forget it. In terms of responses through email, biomedical engineering profs. tend not to respond at all, but in the economics department, the responses are quick and helpful. If you're looking for a bustling city life, Cleveland is nothing like New York. It is, however, a midwest city, in that there are outlets for socializing (bars and clubs). I chose this school because it was ranked highly for its biomedical engineering program and just because it was out of state and in a good location in terms of research hospitals and institutions surrounding the university.

Campus Life and Social Life
Usually, parties can be found whether on campus or off, at Greek houses or not. People may complain that there is nothing to do, but usually the more outgoing tend to find something to keep themselves busy. Students like to go downtown on Thursdays (club ID nights) or stay closer to campus and drink at Mi Pueblo or in the Coventry area, known for The Winking Lizard, Panini's, and McNulty's.

We're a D3 school in sports. I honestly don't know much. Lots of clubs for students to participate in. People spend weekends either gearing up for SpringFest or putting together booths and events during the school year to get their club's names and causes out to other students. Traditionally, many of the ethnic clubs host some of the most impressive and largest in attendance events.

Academics
I can speak most on the BME dept. Professors are clearly knowledgable, but they rarely tend to be engaging and just lecture until class is over. Many opportunities to ask questions in class, but contacting profs during office hours can be daunting. Workload is insane for engineers, especially in the earlier years, but as you get older, you find something you love and don't mind doing the work. Case has been known to assign more work than other schools of similar caliber. Furthermore, Case professors seem to have a secret motto: "Teach yourself." After attending class, you might find yourself more lost than before and will gather with friends to work on homework and projects together.

Student Body
The "typical" student has been desribed as nerdy, but you'll find most students are just intellectual and work hard to succeed. Most students hail from Ohio, which is kind of disappointing for a private university. I was hoping to find more diverse individuals. Students do like to party and have fun. Many students are heavily involved in activities and academics and hold campus jobs that run the gamet from research to office work. A lot of people like to skip class and catch up on lectures through notes posted online. There really isn't a "typical" student. Depending on which major you choose, you might find yourself lumped into a category though.

In Closing...
Managment tend to be a little lazier, and engineers tend to be too serious.
