TAs replace Profs?

Rating: 4/5 (73 ratings)
Introduction
Most of my classes are lectures. I have one communications class that is pretty small. It’s mostly about writing. My freshman writing seminar is pretty small but the majority of classes has a significant number of people. In the lecture classes it is hard to get to know professors. There are certain ones who make themselves available to you, but regardless it’s still hard You can email them or go talk after class or during office hours.TA’s are generally more down to earth, occasionally you get a pompous one but most of the time they are there for you.

Campus Life and Social Life
I work on a TV show called campus insights. It is on a public access TV in Ithaca called Ithaca commons. It’s like a 10 min. drive. It’s a very small staff. It’s a late night – early morning show. When I first got here I thought I was interested in journalism so I got involved with the station. It helps since we don’t have any practical classes.People are very good about publicizing the clubs they think would be relevant in the classes. Before classes and lectures professors announce there things. Basically when you first get here you kind of have to test the waters a little bit. You go out a lot at first but then realize that you can’t do that every night. You start to manage it around your own schedule.

Academics
You have friends that go to frat parties and don’t drink. Here drinking isn’t such a big deal. You definitely need a fake ID, they are cracking down in Ithaca. College town there are a lot of bars I have yet to go to, I’m scared to use my fake ID. Freshman and sophomore if you’re in the Greek system basically go to frat parties from my experience.
Juniors and seniors typically go to the bar because they live in college town. Freshman first semester the frat parties are really open because they are trying to get people to rush. Second semester it’s more closed, smaller gatherings.

Student Body
I’ve found that hanging out with older guys is better, freshman guys are kind of immature. You have to find the balance between ones you can go out and have fun with and ones who can actually manage a conversation. Definitely all the guys in the frats are all about the new freshman girls. You’d see the sophomore girls in the corner being so mad that they’re not getting the attention any more. Definitely hooking is more prevalent. I find a lot of people that are in-between dating and hooking up. It depends on if you’re in the Greek system or not.
