Global Campus with a Global Education

Rating: 2/5 (51 ratings)
Introduction
If you are considering Queens College realize that it is not your traditional college. Queens College is a commuter school so there are very limited opportunites for a thriving social life. If you are looking to have a degree from a school with a great reputation at an affordable price then you should come to Queens College. The campus area is lush, beautiful and very spacious. Also since Queens College is a public school there are many resources at your disposal.

Campus Life and Social Life
The social life is decent for a commuter school. There are a few people who choose to stay after classes and hang out, but for the most part many people go home after classes. There are a lot of student organizations to participate in, there is even a Student Union Building devoted exclusivly to the clubs and programs for students at Queens College. The best part about the social life at Queens College is that there are a number of diverse clubs and organizations that anyone can join. The worst part is that not many people take advantage of it. There are a lot of events that take place during the school year, mostly in the fall, and some past events included belly dancing lessons, free yoga classes, a fashion show, a trip to Six Flags and an international carnival festival. As far as sports goes Queens College is no Ohio State but there are some athletic programs that draw fan fare. Like the water polo program because its Division I Queens College gets to play against programs like Harvard and Georgetown. Aside from the water polo program all other sports programs are Division II so most students aren't interested in attending games. The weekends at Queens College is non-exisitent! unless your a weekend College student on the weekends your most likely to be at home or at work.

Academics
The workload at Queens College is rigorous. There is no simplicity in workload regardless of your major. If your a "safe" major like Media Studies chances are you will be given the same amount of work as someone who is a Philosophy major. Since Queens College has a national reputation the staff at Queens College feel like they have to constantly remind you but stuffing you with excess homework and incredibily hard test. The integrity of the departments vary, most of the departments are good. The Political Science department at Queens College, i'm not sure about the other departments. My major is History and I think the History department is mediocre but to each is own. The Professors at Queens College vary in teaching style and personality, however, most students here will agree that the professors at Queens College are dull. This also might depend on your major, most professors choose to teach in the lecture format which can get pretty boring after a while.

Student Body
The student body here is diverse, there are people from all backgrounds and walks of life that go here. When you walk on campus chances are you'll find a student from every continent in the globe. The diversity is reflected on the diversity in New York, a majority of the students here are New York natives. The social life is subpar, again this is expected being that Queens College is a commuter school. The student body generally is tolerable but there are some people who are stuck up, shallow and self-centered but then you have those students who are focused, career minded and well rounded.

In Closing...
Queens College is a good school if you live in the New York area. If you don't live in New York than I would caution that you consider somewhere else because the cost of living outside of campus is very expensive, it is New York City afterall.
