Lots of Preppies

IntroductionI chose Dartmouth because I live in a suburb outside of Indianapolis and its kind of rural and coming form the Midwest I had no idea what East Coast living would be like. I had this idea that Dartmouth was going to be like the J Crew catalogues I saw all, you know, white house and people in college shirts, like I feel I grew up in Hillbilly country so when it came down to it I thought it would be interesting to come out East I always wanted to so I did and I think its been a great decision so far. I feel like the typical student at Dartmouth is probably going to be Preppy. A lot of people here do come from the East Coast and upper middle class backgrounds but there’s so much diversity too. It’s not just portrayed in the way people dress – a person who may look really preppy could have a personality that’s totally different. People are always surprising me. It’s taught me not to judge people on first impressions.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe reason I choose Dartmouth over other Ivy League schools I got into, because I consider myself a pretty laid back person and I love school and a big nerd deep down, but at the same time I like the slower pace of life here. I feel like people here are happier than other Ivy League schools – at least from what my friends at home who’ve gone to other schools have told me. Academically it’s just as competitive but I don’t believe students have the same cutthroat mentality. Also I feel there’s a greater sense of community because it is in such a rural place. So campus life is so much more the center of everything.

AcademicsThe workload depends on what major you have – how much you have to study here at Dartmouth. For English and Psychology, I do have a lot of reading I probably have 20 hours of reading for both classes combined and then studying outside of that. Despite the workload – people here are really great at managing time – and they definitely have the philosophy work hard, party hard too.
Student BodyThe party scene here is awesome – I am coming from Indiana where we really didn’t have that much to do. We pretty much made everything a drinking game where I’m from. I grew up playing Corn Haul, which is kind of like Beer Pong here at Dartmouth – which is a huge thing and also because I’m Asian we also had a Ping Pong table my entire life – so come here and beer pong is the center of social interaction. I felt that was great. They have a lot of dance parties here – there’s always something going on the weekends and it’s responsible and its safe.
