Lots of Tradition
IntroductionI’m a sociology major – which is kind of the study of everything. I like it – I think its more just common sense and I’m not necessarily verbal, not necessarily mathematical. I just like observing people. So, I sit around campus and do that a lot, so I think it’s a great major for me. I want to use it to go into Advertising and Marketing – that’s my main field of interest. I feel like it can just be helpful all around – give me better perspectives on things and not only do I learn from Profs – but you learn a ton from the students around you – just because everyone has different opinions and they’re from different backgrounds.
Campus Life and Social LifeIt’s easy to skip class but I feel you sometimes pay for it. I’m always attempting to get the highest participation grade because I feel like that’s my only edge – but I think some profs do take attendance which definitely increases people coming to class. I think you have to be responsible for your work – and some profs think if you don’t want to put in the time and you think you can pass the test, that’s fine – but its just different policy for everyone I guess.

Student BodyThe D plan is about 9 to 10 weeks long per term – so we basically have about a 4 quarter system, but they’re called terms and the fall term starts in late Sept., which is really late, later than other schools and runs into early December. Then it goes Christmas break and then early Jan, to mid March, then we have a 2 week Spring Break, then Spring Term is April to Early June which is a little later than other schools too. And then summer term which is really unique to Dartmouth. Generally sophomores, just the whole class stays there and it’s a great way to get to know your class – and by staying there mid June to late August – it provides you with an opportunityortunity to go off and do other things during a term of your choice which is called your off term and that basically what our D Plan is – just being off at some times and on at others. It’s difficult to sometimes be here on campus withy your friends but it just provides you with so many great opportunities.
