Denison is GREAT
Rating: 1.3/5 (21 ratings)
IntroductionI'd recommend Denison for any student looking for a small, high quality liberal arts college. We have a really gorgeous campus and really nice kids. They also give out great scholarships, so the value at Denison FAR exceeds its rivals.
There is a mix of kids, but not too many really way out there ones - like goth for instance. Also, the Greek scene is quite weak, because there are no frat houses. But, if you are a sports fanatic you might prefer to go to OSU or someplace else.
The kids here are really friendly, not at all cut-throat. Most are pretty smart and hard working too.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere are lots of things to do on campus such as concerts, movies, guest lectures, and, of course, parties. We do a lot of general hanging out. I play ultimate frisbee and it's a blast. There are lots of other club sports. I also play in a couple of music ensembles that aren't too shabby. I'm also on the debate/mock trial team and we're pretty good.
There is a great mall pretty close by. It's brand new and all outside - you've never seen anything like it. It's called Easton Center and there is a bus that goes there on weekends (although admittedly mostly girls go). There are some food places in town that are pretty good. If you have a car it's even more fun, but you can easily live without one. Everybody lives on campus all four years. It's kind of nice. You can't lose track of your friends.
AcademicsAcademics are more challenging than you probably think! There are some kids who flunk out.
This is a small school and you will know all your profs - and you better show up for class AND PARTICIPATE. So you have to be awake. There are no TAs or professors that you can't understand. Economics is great. PoliSci and Env. Studies are also really great.
Next year I'm going to do a semester abroad. I'm hoping for France.
Student BodyThe kids are from all over the country. I have friends from California, NY, NJ, Ill, Kentucky, Penn, and of course Ohio. I am also friends with several international kids. We all mix really well.
Not too J Crew or Holister (although some). The girls are exceptionally pretty (in my opinion). Not too many drunks or druggies - very few actually.
In Closing...Some kids might hate living on campus for 4 years. Sophomore housing is probably the worst. Freshman dorms were fun, but nothing fancy. Seniors have awesome apartments. I personally hate the food, but our dorms have good kitchens so I cook for myself whenever possible.
Overall I would never want to go to school anywhere else. I think almost anybody looking to be at a smaller school should look at Denison. By the way - it's MUCH better than Kenyon, which is literally stuck in the middle of cornfields. At least we have a nice town. Our campus is prettier too.
If you have good grades and SATs you might qualify for a scholarship that will make your parents very happy. I would have ended up at a SUNY if it wasn't for my scholarship.
