Denison: Work Hard, Play Hard

Rating: 0/5 (0 ratings)
Introduction
The school is small, so the teachers know you and will be willing to help you but only if you stay on their good side (attend class, speak up, go for extra help etc.). Apply for a scholarship! The school has a huge endowment and this is how they spend their money.

Campus Life and Social Life
There are frats and sororities, even though there are no houses. Frats host a lot of the parties and if you are not involved in one by the spring, guy will find it hard to attend a party. There is nothing to do on the weekend but drink, so if you don't go to parties it will be hard to meet new people. There is a HUGE drug scene. It may not be too obvious but its there, and not hard to find. Coke is by far the biggest drug, with pot as a close second. Everyone is pretty friendly, including the security guards who may be writing you up if you are too loud past quiet hours.
There are a ton of clubs (sports, arts, political, science etc.) try to get involved in at least one or two. They help you meet people, do something productive and perhaps can lead you to something that you really enjoy.

Academics
There are no TAs at the school so it is easy to know your professor. Most will go out on a limb for you if you appear to be interested in your class, so show up!! The major departments are bio/chem, psychology, and economics. Although programs like cinema are growing in strength. Since there is such a large party scene it is really easy to forget about your homework. There also seems to be that one friend that never has work and is always ready to party. However, by the end of your first year you will have a couple friends with a gpa of 1.0 or bellow. Failing out is extremely easy, and will happen to one or two of your friends by the end of your first year.
There are always people in the library and it stays fairly lively (and social). There are always people there until closing time (2 am). Go to the library, make friends and get some work done.

Student Body
Partying happens every night for the first week of the semester, then an average of 3 or 4 for the rest of the semester. Greek life runs social life (for both girls and guys), so it is best to join or at least rush. Sports are not big here. The football team is terrible. The swimming team is one of the best in the nation, but no one watches them. The lacrosse team is pretty good and even have their own frat (phi delts- the lax bros), But the weekend is to sleep/party and do homework, not to watch sports teams.
Everyone is relatively friendly and are interested in meeting first years (partly to scope out who they want in their frat/sorority). Most people are nice and you don't need to earn your keep.

In Closing...
Balance is the key to this school. You have to be able to party but then get up for class the next day (even if you puke in the bathroom before you go in). Or for people that don't like to drink they have to find things to do, or go to parties and socialize without drinking. If you balance you will succeed, if not welcome to summer school.
