Study Abroad
IntroductionI chose Dickinson because they have a great study abroad program. You should consider Dickinson if you are interested in learning about different cultures. Dickinson also prepared me well for life after college. I work in finance now where it is becoming increasingly more important to have a global outlook.
I also chose Dickinson because I wanted to go to a small liberal arts school. My classes had between 15-30 students, so everyone could participate. You were able to get to know the professors easily and a few of them acted as my mentor throughout school.
The college is also vary aware of the environment and does a lot of work to educate students about our impact.
You shouldn't go to Dickinson if you want to be in or near a big city. Washington, DC and Philly are close, but students rarely travel off campus.
Campus Life and Social LifeDickinson is a good college for people who want to be involved in a variety of social aspects on campus. I was involved in 2 varsity sports, and about 5 club sports. I liked Dickinson because they encourage students to get involved in life outside of the classroom. A lot of students are into Greek life, but you don't have to join a sorority or fraternity to have fun and be apart of the scene.
The food at Dickinson is great! It's better to stay on campus and eat than to order from off campus. The campus is pretty small and public transportation is non existant, so if you don't have a car, you are pretty much trapped on campus.
The bar scene isn't great. There are only about 3 bars worth going to, but you end up loving them because it's where all of your friends hang out senior year.

AcademicsThe International Busines, American Studies and Science departments are great. For the most part, I had great professors who were experts in thier field. I was able to manage the workload, and also had time to play 2 varsity sports. I would say that my professors were fair to students and were aware that we have more activities going on outside the classroom.
Dickinson has a great language department. My friends who went to other schools were not encouraged to take a language, but I think it helped round out my academic experience.
In addition to academics, Dickinson also makes their students take gym classes. Personally, I like sports but some of my friends didn't like this aspect. Even if you're not into sports you can take health classes, aerobics or rollerblading.
Student BodyA lot of students are from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. There are also a lot of international students. For the most part, Dickinson is a pretty preppy school. Most stududents are caucasian, but I think Dickinson does a lot to recruit and encourage diverse students to apply.
In Closing...I chose Dickinson because they offered me a good financial aid package. This was important to me and my parents.
