Basketball and More Basketball
IntroductionI came here with absolutely no idea what I wanted to major in and or do – so the great thing is – you don’t have core requirements you have to meet your freshman year – you have to take a writing 20 course – you also have to take a seminar course freshman year, but you don’t have to take this history, this chemistry, this and that – it’s just really nice cause you can take anything that sounds interesting.
Campus Life and Social LifeI came to Duke not knowing anything about college basketball or Duke basketball and just fell in love with it. I met some of the players my freshman year and had no idea who they are and was just like.”So you’re interested in?” And they’re like, “we play basketball.” I’m like, “Oh, cool” I didn’t realize how amazing it was until basketball season came up in the spring and then I just kind of ended up joining a tent – you tent for the UNC game and we were tent #6 which is a huge time commitment but you also do get to be with the most passionate fans and I have yet to miss a basketball game at Duke – people are very, very loyal and very enthusiastic and part of the fun is the school spirit itself. Even if you aren’t as into basketball – just the school spirit is really fun to get into. It great to track all the basketball teams – all the players that are coming in. It really overwhelms you and come tenting time, K-Ville, the social scene just shifts out there and there’s parties there before the UNC game. You meet so many people – it’s a really, really fun experience
AcademicsI originally wanted to do something with economics and took econ 1 and realized I didn’t like that at all – thought I wanted to do math – so took Calculus 3 and realized I didn’t want to do that – and when I looked into the psychology department I realized that I didn’t really like how the department was set up. So, process of elimination first drew me to Cultural Anthropology cause it had a lot of different elements that I liked – you get to study people but it’s a less structured major and so you can take twist to it you like. And then after that I also got into Philosophy, the logic course I loved and started taking classes in that and this semester I started taking Linguistics courses and decided to pick up that minor as well.
Student BodyI never wear heels on game days- your feet have to be in prime condition for the insane jumping up and down – you’re on feet like standing in line and then in the arena waiting – cause you’re not allowed to sit down in Cameron as long as there’s basketball players on the court. So as long as our team is on the court, you can’t sit down, you’re standing the whole time – people will line up, how many hours in advance depends on how good the opposing team is. Then you get ready – people don’t prep up for every game, but there’s a lot of prep that goes when you’re just standing in line – if people have paint, the people paint up – otherwise people will meet each other and an hour or two before the game they let you in and you try to find the best spot you can. TV side or non TV side, middle front’s the best and then you wait – the team comes up they do a few practice shots and they leave and come back on and the game comes and you’re just bouncing up and down the entire game and yelling, next day your throat hurts and your sore but it’s well worth it. Win or loose we still support our team.
In Closing...I honestly do know of people who are seniors and yet have to go to a basketball game, but those are very, very rare cases. Bas
