Police at Duke
IntroductionDo not come if you are too liberal. You won't find yourself well-accepted. But if you come as a staunch conservative, you'll find you hate everyone here.
I came for athletics.
Campus Life and Social LifeDuke is killing off the social scene. There is no life on campus at night, but there was a lot off-campus, Duke recently bought all the houses that were being rented out to students in an effort to sell them to community members that won't rent to students. Sports are great, but they're no night life. There will be many bad years on campus before the students rebel or Duke realizes what the f--k they did.
The cops here seem to treat Duke students as coked-out drug dealers. I, along with many many friends who have dealt with cops, both Duke and Durham Policemen, can vouch for this. A few examples: Durham cops brought in 10 squad cars to close down a "pool party" and cracked a student's head open because he didn't want to get out of the pool. On two separate occasions, I was forced to get down by a Durham cop grabbing his weapon. Not once was I guilty of anything. He "just didn't want [us] running". Durham cops you can avoid, but there are many incidents like this on campus, with our own Duke police. No one here feels they are here to serve and protect us. A student is currently being charged with assault on a police officer after someone called the cops on him because he was being too loud. When they got there, they attacked the kid. Straight out tackled him and tried to cuff him. The kid got scared and panicked so he resisted, spent that night in the hospital, got stitches in his wrists from the cuffs, and was admitted with a busted lip and bloody nose. And now is facing assault on a poilce officer.
AcademicsIf anyone ever came back to visit you after they graduated high school to tell you they did more work in high school then they ever do now in college, they definitely didn't go to a school anywhere near the level of this one. You will struggle a certain amount, and you will be forced to evaluate your goals and dreams. You will realize that it's not realistic to have good grades at the higher level classes without putting in 20 out of 24 hours each day. However, you should also realize that there are athletes here, so there are classes and majors that would allow you to retain your 4.0 without too much effort. You just need to know how the system works.
Student BodyThere are different discrete populations here. Some include: the Asian Indian group that is withdrawn and keeps to itself. The Rich White boy groups that joins frats. The African-American group that is often seen, but not heard from by the rest of campus. The athletes, who overlap with other groups. Spoiled, stuck-up rich girls. Really intelligent nerds/ugly people/losers. Of all of these cliques, athletes are the most "normal."
In Closing...Many changes are underway on campus. Ask around when you visit.
