I like it here at EMU

Rating: 4/5 (96 ratings)
Introduction
I am from Ohio and I wanted to go to an out-of-state college. Eastern Michigan has reciprocity with some school in Ohio, which means that all Ohio students can attend EMU for in-state tuition. I would say that this college is for anyone who would prefer an intimate setting, because even though it is a medium-size school, it has a small feel to it. It's close to both Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Campus Life and Social Life
There are lots of cool clubs, both secular and religious, and greek life is awesome here too, although you will not be made to feel left out if you are not part of a fraternity or sorority. If you are into basketball, the men's team is pretty good, and the women are Mid-American Conference champs! Weekends here are pretty laid-back, because many people go home. So if you are planning to stay here on weekends, join a club or make friends with other weekend residents so that you will have something to do.

Academics
I am only a freshman, so I have not really had many samplings of professors in different areas. I really liked psychology with Dr. Lauterbach, Poetry with Tony Spicer, Sociology with Mary Byrnes, French with Dr. Vosteen, and Dynamic Earth Systems (geology) with Dr. Bradley. Tap I with Sarah Randazzo and Speech with Allan Vietszke was all right, and although I find the topic of World Regions interesting, I don't recommend Mobley - I think she's a little dry. Some of my classes here have been hard, and some of them have been easy. It really just depends on what you are good at.

Student Body
There really is no typical student at EMU. Yes, most of them are from Michigan but the personalities really vary. EMU is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the US, and there are lots of Foreign Exchange students as well.

In Closing...
In general, I like it here, as I have had good experiences thus far. Of course your experience here is what you make it. Also, for your safety, there is a program here called SEEUS, that you can call in the evening and at night, and they will escort you anywhere on campus.
