Lackluster School With Few Strong Points

Rating: 3/5 (17 ratings)
Introduction
When looking at this school, it's important to be very focused on your particular career. There are only a few fields offered here that are actually any good. The statistics about Eastern Michigan University lie. Unless you are going into a music field (most noteably Music Education), EMU is a waste of your time and your money. The School of Music here is excellent, but even then, you will have to deal with the academics of Eastern, which are lousy. I got sucked into this school because of the outstanding music department, and I'm transfering to a new school at the end of this semester because of the rest of the University.

Campus Life and Social Life
There is little to no social life here on campus. Eastern is split 50/50 with residents and commuters. The commuters come for classes and don't stick around for much else. The residents are left with very little to do. The Campus Life student group attempts to throw activities together, but does a poor job with planning and then actually following through on plans. People don't really want to be here. As such, even most of the residents leave town on weekends. With so few things to do, most rely on simply drugs and alcohol (not necessarily even partying) to pass the time. Athletics are so poor here that the school offers free attendance to every event. Even then, only 5-10% of the seats will be filled. To sum it up, people don't really enjoy Eastern. They go here because it was their only option.

Academics
Academics here are poor. Most classes that I've taken were easier than my freshman year of high school, and the average student here fails miserably. The academic departments here are designed for students who never gave any amount of effort or care into high school. The professors are apathetic, tenured, and lazy. They assign plenty of work, but it's busy work. Many days it seems like the goal here is to give lazy students an empty degree, sending them unprepared to their future careers. Of course, there are obviously rare exceptions, but these are highly unlikely to come across.

Student Body
The typical EMU student arrived here because they either got plenty of scholarship money, or this was their only option other than a community college (and to be honest, community college would serve them better). Sadly, the best way to describe most of the people I come in contact with here is "idiotic". No other word seems fitting. To make matters worth, regular time spent with all of them leaves the few good students feeling apathetic.

In Closing...
I guess the only thing I can really say is Eastern Michigan University is not the "college experience". While student bodies of most schools actually look forward to returning to school, ours looks forward to leaving. Only come to EMU if you have no other option.
