Great for Film Majors

Rating: 5/5 (20 ratings)
Introduction
Emerson College is a great school if you're a film major - scratch that - a fantastic school for film majors, as long as you don't get lazy (the bane of all film majors here at school). Get envolved in as many shoots as you can, go to the Film Equipment Distribution Center and ask as many questions as humanely possible. That's the thing about being a student here at Emerson, the tools are all here, but YOU MUST make the initiative to learn. Audio majors may be a bit depressed with the Visual Media Department, because in your first year here there's much more VISUAL media that you must learn about and perform. Keep in mind that we have the #1 college radio station here in the country though, and there's a ton of really amazing studios you'll get to work with. Theatre Majors here have TONS of auditions for both student run films and student run stage shows, and there's a lot of work here as well as around boston for actors and actresses. Not to mention that if you're theatre design or costumes, that we have the Semel and Greene theatres here and an ENORMOUS prop and costume shop for people to work in and use. Think you'll be using the majestic often? THINK AGAIN. It's a union run theatre. Everytime we open it, we have to pay union wages to the ushers. Don't think that Emerson uses the majestic a lot. In fact, there's more outside productions run at the majestic than Emerson productions. WLP majors have fun here also, there's a lot of different clubs where you can get work published (granted not everyone will read it, but it's nice to put on your resume). There's a bunch of stuff for TV majors, studios, shows, package shoots, if you're TV, make sure to be involved with that. Also, marketing majors get along fine here as well, there's a lot of different creative people here in marketing. The only major here that seems iffy is Political communication...because NO ONE here really has that major. I don't really know much about it, and I don't think that there's really an emphasis on that here at all.

Campus Life and Social Life
Here's the Emerson College breakdown:

LAZY VMA MAJORS (TV, FILM, AUDIO) and most WLP MAJORS: Party every weekend, more concentrated on school work, don't really join any clubs or activities, usually spend most of their time hanging out and complaining about some 8 page paper they have to write but have been putting off.

ECCENTRIC VMA MAJORS: ALWAYS doing something every night that has to be with a club, ALWAYS on projects EVERY WEEKEND, super busy all the time. Their good friends are the people they see on set (or in studio) every day.

THEATRE MAJORS: Running around to rehearsals and designing their own shows. Moderately busy, and always loud.

MARKETING MAJORS: Always doing some sort of huge marketing project, they join clubs, but not as many as the eccentric VMA majors.

POLITICAL COMM: At some protest in Boston every weekend or at a leadership through service meeting, usually organizing some sort of group effort at emerson.

OH AND ALSO, LETS GO OVER THE SEXUAL ORIENTATION:

VMA MAJORS: STRAIGHT, MALE AND FRUSTRATED
EVERYONE ELSE: GAY MALES AND STRAIGHT FRUSTRATED FEMALES

You think that just because you're a guy you're going to get girls here at Emerson? Think again. You'll have better luck hanging out at another school to pick up girls. Girls here just complain how there are no straight guys around, even when they're right in front of them. It's insanely hard to have a relationship here from what I've seen. Every emerson girl has a boyfriend from BU, Berklee or Northeastern, and every Emerson straight guy is single. If you're gay though, you shouldn't have a problem at all. My roommate seems to be doing just fine, along with every other gay male here at Emerson. Just prepare yourself to have a bunch of girls come to you to complain about boy trouble all the time. Lesbians on the other hand seem to have a decent number, but it doesn't look like anyone really hooks up lesbian wise at emerson.

Academics
Your first year, you'll hate research writing or expository writing the most, and moderately hate the rest of your initial gen eds. But at least they're easy. You'll start getting into your intro classes for your major by your second or third semester, but then your classes will get a lot harder, and it kind of hits you hard. Also, with the exception of your first semester, you choose all your classes online - which is a pain in the ASS if you have a bad slot to sign up. All the classes you want will be taken, and you'll have to consistently check them to see if anyone drops out so you can sign up. It's a terrible system, but at least it beats having to go in and manually do it all. ALSO, this is probably one of the only schools where your classes will get in the way of your education. I know it sounds weird, but it's true. You'll be learning more about your major in student organizations than in the actual classes. Sometimes it feels like you'd be learning more if you could spend all your time on clubs and none on classwork. When that urge comes, DON'T. You may learn a lot, but you'll fail out of school. Where's the fun in that? Try to juggle both, as hard as it may be.

Student Body
If you like indie rock, wear American apparel, and smoke ciggarettes... odds are you're a student from Emerson. That's pretty much the typical Emersonian, but we're generally acceptive of everyone here though, if you're a jock, you'll fit in, no problem. There's really no set catagory here for students. We have a little bit of everyone here, but generally everyone is extremely acceptive and understanding, and you can practically strike up a converstation randomly with everyone on campus. Oh, and if you see someone acting like a jerk (unless someones about to get hurt or something is about to break), be hesitant to call them out on it, because odds are you may have to work with them in the future (be it film, acting, live mix, tv studio, whatever).

In Closing...
If you get accepted, make sure you take advantage of everything we have to offer. And also, keep in mind that the housing here will defintiely not be good next year for those people who don't like dorm life (because we're selling our 3 buildings that are off of Boyslton st.). Prepare yourself for living in an appartment by your junior year because not many people here live on campus. Oh, and if you're vegan and have a meal plan, you're kind of screwed. There are some vegetarian options, but it's really hard because a lot of times the vegetables here are rank (the salad bar sits out a lot. Then they take the vegetables from yesterday and put them out AGAIN). It's not cool being a vegetarian that can't eat a lot of vegetables. A lot of vegetarian friends I had turned back to eating meat because they couldn't take it anymore.
