Go to an Ivy Instead
Rating: 1.5/5 (41 ratings)
IntroductionIf you can get into an Ivy League school, go there instead. It feels as though everyone is simply here because they were rejected from their first choice, which tends to be pretty obnoxious to listen to for weeks on end.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe social life on campus is pretty abysmal. Occasionally the frats will throw a half decent party, but they feel way too few and far between to consider Emory much of a party school. The real fun to be had is in the city of Atlanta, however this may not be an option for students without cars. Atlanta offers the MARTA public transit system, but many students regard it as dangerous and confusing, and cab fares soar far beyond the average student's budget. There are a lot of club activities on campus, suiting pretty much any student's interest. Clubs are undoubtedly the best way to find your niche here.
AcademicsFor the most part, you cannot go wrong in any given department here at Emory. Most professors are elites in their specific field and many of them have written multiple books on their subject of expertise. They are usually pretty approachable because class sizes here are relatively small. TA's are rare, usually only found in the required health/physical education classes. The workload really depends upon your major; the math and science-based classes here tend to be more difficult and more rigorous in terms of assignments.

In Closing...If you are looking for a school with a relatively small undergraduate population and with a very solid academic reputation, apply to Vanderbilt or Brown or the like. Emory wholly lacks school spirit, making it difficult to actually get excited about going to school here. Although on paper Emory appears to be diverse, most of the school divides itself into factions, which are predominantly Jewish and Asian groups. There is a very palpable wealthy population at Emory, and for those without money or for those who simply resent people who flaunt their wealth, this becomes EXTREMELY tiresome. If you have the grades and the scores, go to an impressive school that people have actually heard of, that way even if you are unhappy, you can at least feed your ego every time someone asks where you go to college.
