I'm Not in California Anymore....

Rating: 2/5 (76 ratings)
Introduction
I wanted to come to Emory because it does have a diverse educational program and it was in a good city that I had never been to before and it was a whole different change. A lot of people say it’s in the South, if you’re from any place else than from the South, it’s scary, but it’s actually a really nice place and I love it a lot. My parents always ask me why I came here because they wanted me to stay in California, but like I do things here that I could never do anywhere else. I volunteered at a Juvenile prison, and that’s just a whole different experience from Metro Atlanta than anywhere else.

Campus Life and Social Life
As a way of clubs we have your basic ethnic clubs you know, African Student association and Indian Student association, but then we have things like Swing club, dance club, just all these random things, we have vegetarian club, I don’t what they do. You can get involved with student government. I was involved w/ student government, also media council, I’m a DJ for Emory’s radio station, and we have the Emory TV station that you can be a part of. I also wrote for the Emory Newspaper. So there are just a lot of different outlets that if you’re interested in you can definitely grasp.

Academics
In the English department it’s a large emphasis on Irish studies which you don’t find anywhere else either. Next year I’m taking a seminar on Yeats and drama and another seminar on American Drama and Theatre. So I mean people kind of de-value the English major, but we learn a lot about this country and its history and all the programs at Emory are like that. They have a diverse realm of studies. Pre-Med, it’s just like anywhere you might go for Pre-Med, except we have a pre-med society and that’s free to join I thing you pay like $10 or something—not free to join but you don’t have to meet any qualifications except $10. And then, you get set up with admission directors from Med schools and they offer free MCAT tests and stuff like that.

Student Body
I like the distance from the clubs, they’re about 10 minutes away depending on where you want to go and you don’t really discover the clubs until I you’re about a sophomore or a Junior, because you know, the ID problem. But every Thursday Emory promotes a club, a different club and it’s 18 and over. They’re all over Atlanta midtown, downtown, Buckhead. And then for non-Thursday nights it’s usually just Frat row so if you’re into the sorority scene or Fraternity scene then that’s your place to go, but you don’t have to be in a Fraternity or Sorority to go down to those parties.

In Closing...
Just like anywhere else that you go Emory is what you make of it. Some people come in with a really negative attitude and saying you know, we don’t have a football team and everybody’s rich and all of that but those are just stereotypes and if you want to play into them, you can. I myself come from California and it’s definitely a different experience being here but I didn’t even have to grow to love it, I automatically love it because there’s just such diversity of people and you can really find your niche if you want to.
