Best decision I ever made
IntroductionThe best thing about FIU is that it gives you the Miami lifestyle College Experience without having to pay around $30,000 at the University of Miami (which is only about a 15 minute drive away). For High School students in Miami, going to FIU means you will get the University atmosphere you can't find at Miami-Dade College and you won't be needing to take out student loans and work full time to pay off your tuition for UM.
Campus Life and Social LifeFIU (south campus) is located in the melting pot of town with just about anything you would need or want to do located within a 5-25 minute walk or drive. From a PUBLIX just across the street, two large shopping malls and dozens of restaurants less than 10 minutes away, Coconut Grove for that Thursday night partying about 15 minutes away and only 25 minutes (if you drive like you're from Miami) to the hottest clubs anywhere in the U.S. on South Beach, FIU definitely has a great location. On Campus, there is ALWAYS something going on, with the only negative being that parking is horrible and probably will always be pretty bad. Greek life, regardless of what other reviews might say, is live and vibrant at FIU, but like most things, it is what you make of it. Greek life is not for everyone, but if it's for you, never will a day go by without having something to do. FIU's football team was recently bumped up to Division1, and this season will be the first ever meeting between FIU & UM, with much more exciting stuff to come.
AcademicsIf you're not into the whole party scene and are more the kind of student that is going to college simply to study and work (get in - get out - move on) FIU can accommodate you too with thousands of quiet study spots overlooking about 10 lakes/ponds, not to mention being the University with the largest student library in Florida. If you are going into Business or are thinking about it, nothing beats FIU. As an Engineering major, our Engineering campus is about a 4 minute drive away (yes, 4 not 5 minutes), equipped with many great professors that are for the most part very accessible and flexible. Anthropology and Sociology are also very strong at FIU.
Student BodyThe majority of what you'll find and see on campus at FIU is a large Latin based student body with more than enough beautiful young women to keep you wanting to come back to class. There are also large numbers of African-American, Caribbean and based students adding to the culture melting pot that Miami already is. On a normal day, you can usually hear some Hip Hop in Graham Center coming from a pep rally or an MPHC Step Show or just a Campus club promoting a pizza sale. Salsa classes are offered nightly to get you ready to fit in on South Beach (if you're from out of town).
In Closing...FIU is an up-and-coming school that has been on the rise for some time now. Each new year only brings more opportunities whether it be new classes, buildings, parking garages, gyms, or nearby clubs and parties... you will find it very hard to be bored going to Florida International University. Coming here was the best decision I ever made.
