FSU Blues
IntroductionIf you are an elementary education major DO NOT go to Florida State!!! I'll spare you the details of my horrifying experience, but let's just say that after a semester of headaches and a load of BS from the administration, I gave up trying to get into the program and left the university to go back home. FSU does have a wonderful music and theater program, and I hear the circus school is great. PR majors and Pol. Science are other good majors for FSU, and of course, those interested in sports.
Campus Life and Social LifeI didn't do much partying while I was at FSU because I'm just not a party girl. The campus life was okay... there are TONS of clubs to choose from. I spent more time out of town than in town while I was at FSU, so I didn't join any clubs, but I was thinking about it. Everyone seemed really friendly and if I were there longer, I would definitely have gotten involoved. Social people would thrive in the atmosphere at FSU.
AcademicsSee the first section for the departments... All of my professors were great and so were the TAs. The workload was tolerable, but a LOT of reading. The problem came with administration -- they seemed more concerned about whether the Seminoles made it to the college championships than whether the students passed their classes and graduated. Again, the elementary education program is supposed to be a good one, but I don't recommend transfers trying to get in... That's what ruined it for me. All the college is interested in is $$ so they want the freshmen who will be putting every dime they spend on college into FSU. That means the transfers are low on the list for being admitted to the elem. ed program. Most of them probably take a bunch of useless classes while they wait to get accepted into the program, which is a waste of time and money, but it gets FSU what it wants -- more money!!!
Student BodyWow... There's not a typical student at Florida State. That's part of what makes it a good school -- there were people from Africa, England, Japan, China, the Bahamas, and so many other places in my classes. Walking around campus, there is no "one" look that seems prevalent among the students. The student body is so diverse that to try to stereotype it would be absolutely impossible.
In Closing...FSU is a great school if you want a school with a huge focus on football and litle focus on academics. It's also a great school for people interested in music and theater. And I guess as far as huge state universities go, it's not a bad school. The campus is beautiful and is kept very clean... If you go, check out Landis Green outside of Strozier Library. The fountain is really neat.
