There is such thing as too much partying

Rating: 2.1/5 (65 ratings)
Introduction
There are more cops in Tallahassee than in the entire United States...or at least it seems like that. Honestly be very careful what you do and where you do it. There are 5-0's everywhere just waiting for college kids to slip up and trust me these southern pricks will not be friendly at all. I chose this school for stupid reasons. One, I read some of these reviews and thought wow this school sounds amazing. Two, I wanted to go somewhere warm. Lastly, I wanted to go to a big school because it has such great facilities. I was disappointed with some of the things I had hoped for when I got to FSU, but the one thing that shocked me the most about this school is how poorly educated the kids are prior to coming here. It is quite sad that Florida schools are that pathetic. At first I thought it was crazy that the state offers a bright futures program (basically the state pays kids to go to college), but after seeing how some of these kids write, it does not surprise me. Florida kids obviously have higher priorities than hitting the books, which include tanning, weightlifting, and athletics. Hate to sound like a nerd (which by all means I am not considering I was a three sport athlete in high school), but by coming to FSU I am ashamed at how dumb some of these kids truly are.

Campus Life and Social Life
Where should I start?...How about the social life. There are plenty of kids to get to know especially if you spend your first year in the dorms. Everyone I have met have been very nice and friendly. I had absolutely no trouble meeting and getting to know people, which is a plus about this school. As for the party scene, there is a lot and lot of drinking. Although it is not the drinking you see in movies or even in the high school parties I went to. The parties are actually rather lame. Maybe it was the fact that I came from a private school where I drank all four years at house parties on the weekends, but I was expecting something more from a school that kids brag as being a crazy party school. There is a difference between being a party school and a heavy drinking school. This is definitely a heavy drinking school filled with kids downing copious amounts of hard alcohol and thinking they are the "man". Though there are some good frat parties, there are not as many as I thought there would be. It is very disappointing. Where is the animal house scene when I need it. Weekends start on Thursday which is cool i guess although it brings me back to the point that Florida kids care more about screwing around than working. It must be the water down here. As for the bar scene...have fun forcing your way through blow out guedos who post up at the local strip. The bar scene is pretty lame, so to make it better I suggest getting really drunk before hand. When in doubt in Tally, drink yourself to black out and it will make everything more enjoyable. If you think I am joking ask most people and they will tell you the same thing. "If you go to the strip, you better be S&*#faced".

Academics
I am a business major, so I only know that the business department is actually very good. The teachers know what they are talking about and the workload is very manageable. The TAs do not teach the classes, at least the classes I have had, but they are surprisingly very helpful. FSU has pretty solid academics although no one seems to care. The classes are a little on the large side so there is a lot of socializing and little paying attention to what the professors are teaching. It is sad, but academics are not a huge priority for the average FSU student.

Student Body
Out of state kids are in for a real culture shock that Florida and especially Tallahassee has in store. Everyone cares way too much about how they look and the girls are very materialistic. People down here are too dumb to hold sophisticated conversations that deal with academics. You would be better off talking to them about the tabloids. This place is just an institution where people can hone their social and beauty skills, not academics.

In Closing...
This school is very deceiving. One, especially from out of state, sees this school as a great place to have "American Pie" fun all the while basking in the Florida sun. However, Tallahassee is home to some cold winters and the surrounding area is very...well bland. Other than the campus, there is not much to do but get absolutely and the city of Tallahassee is so small. Right as you drive into the city; you see signs that say you are leaving it. The city is very disappointing mainly because it is filled with capital buildings and very uptight southern politicians. I am not trying to bash the school, just speaking the blatant truth. This school will turn most into pot smoking alcoholics and if you choose not to be a part of that social scene, then good luck finding "you kind." Florida is an interesting culture filled with egotistical people that spend endless hours in the leech center gym trying to get that six pack extra "six packy". In closing, this school is fun once you can look past all of the nonsense. It is surely a different college experience than you will get anywhere else. If you want, you really can get a good education here. The frats are really big, but there are a lot of politics so good luck getting into ones like Pike.
