IntroductionGeorge Mason is a BIG school. 40,000 students and growing, and you will get a chance to meet them all on your hike/journey to class. On average, it takes me 15 mins to get to class from the dorms. my advice is to invest in a good pair of sneakers and avoid at all cost trying to look cute in heels, upper classmen WILL look at you all crazy like. Not that a big school is a bad thing...everyday you'll meet someone you've never seen before and the diversity here is amazing, anyone can fit in and find their niche here at mason.
p.s. join greek life. it will make any college a thousand times better, especally larger schools. it's like having a home away from home.
Campus Life and Social LifeLike any other college, parties on campus are not going to happen, well not for any longer than 10 mins before the RA breaks it up. there are frat house parties all the time however. Since Fairfax virginia is so vast, most frats supply shuttles to their houses on major party nights. Be warned, most parties will be far off of campus and you will often find yourself stranded and drunk begging strangers to pile you in the back of their car with 50 other freshman.
mason allows freshmen to have cars on campus however, i was able to survive with out one my first year. but begging for rides got old real quick. a car is a must in fairfax. yes there is the DC metro in the area but the closest stop is still 20 mins away from campus. i have to admit though, that the public bus system in fairfax is very relible and cheap, 25 cent to go anywhere. tthere isnt much in fairfax but once you do get moble, DC is a great area to get your weekend party on.
AcademicsIf you do decide to go to mason beware of a program called NCC. at orenatation some professors will pull you in by promising no exams. it's great at first because they do all your sheduling for you and hey no exams, but dont be fooled. it's a program that intergrates most of your gen ed classes into 2 classes a semester. for example, if your learning about history and do a power point about it, you get credit for history and communication. what happens is certain/ most subject are streched out of context just to fit the requirments. every class is filled with mindless discussions of classmates opinions that go off subject and classes were never thought my a professor in that field. everynight there was a writting assignment of at least 2 pages which more than made up for the lack of exams. and dont even think about transfering...the program is to new to be taken seriously. my friend when tring to transfer to Va Tech would have only recieved 9 out of the 32 credits from the program if he transfer. when something is to good to be true, it is. during the program i had a 3.0, this year i have a 3.7.
Student BodyDiverse yet not. sure there is lots of different cultures here at mason but one look in the dining hall will prove that "like" stick together.
In Closing...The food is getting better, new buildings are soon to open , and new housing in 08.
Mason isnt so bad now, and it's only getting better
