IntroductionIf you're looking for a city school, you should definitily look into GW. As far as what you will face here, there is always something happening in the city. For example, you might be woekn up by the presidents motorcade, or be able to see the dalai lama. The school is big, but it isn't huge, and the campus is the city, so you have a mix of office buildings and class rooms. Given the choice, i would definitly choose it again, even though the tuition is a bit pricey.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe five best things about the social life...first, there's always something happening. If you live in the biggest freshman dorm (Thurston) it's very social and you will meet a lot of people in a short time. For those interested in greek life, there is plenty of it on campus, and a plethora of events you can go to. There are also plenty of clubs in the city, as well as other things unique to dc. There are plenty of clubs and organizations, and if you don't find one you like, you can create one, and the school will fund it. As far as the downsides, there isa lot of partying, which sometimes makes things very loud (but also fun). If you're not the drinking type, you won't be bored, so don't worry about it. No body cares whether or not you're into that at GW, everyone socializes. We don't have a football team, so if you're looking for that, it's not here. Mens basketball is popular, it's a bit harder to get fans at womens games. A lot of the teams play more away games, like baseball, so fans don't always know when they are. Mostly people stick around on the weekends, there's way too much to do in DC.
AcademicsThe academics are what you make of them. It's possible to create a really easy schedule (remember to fill your requirements early) but you don't gain as much from it. My work load varies, i'm taking 17 credits at the moment, some weeks it's a lot, and sometimes nothing at all. the departments vary as well, but teachers are usually very accessible, and the TA's are generally helpful. Definitly go to ratemyprofessor.com before signing up for a class, it's really helpful. Sometimes its hard to get the classes you want, so make sure to have back up options when creating a schedule. Other than that, it's really a learn as you go process.
Student BodyI love almost everyone I have met. Most of the people you find on campus are smart, really interesting people with something to say. However, there are an abundance of kids who aren't there for their academic abilities so much as how much there parents paid. I'm not trying to stereo type the student body, i think that's unfair, there are too many different people to make that call. I will say though, a lot of people are from New York, New Jersey, and PA, so be prepared to meet east coasters.
In Closing...I love my school, I think it's amazing. Yeah, I'm biased, but it's what I wanted. I would say that if you're considering the school at all, and if it's possible for you to visit, do so. The campus has an incredible feel to it, the people are awesome, and over all the way of life there is unique from any of the other schools I visited (and also when I went to see friends at other schools over the course of the year). Just check it out.
