Across the Pond
IntroductionI’m a freshman in the college. I’m an undecided major, probably philosophy or English. I’m from London, England. The students that are from overseas are largely part of a little overseas clique here at Georgetown, most of them live in that building over there.
The biggest thing that I like about Georgetown is its size. The fact that it’s a small liberal arts college. I feel as though you can’t really enjoy a place until you fully involve yourself in it. There’s a lot of potential for involvement at Georgetown. A because it’s so small and B because of the diversity of groups.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best thing about Georgetown is that it really gives you an opportunity for whatever your future field might be. There’s a lot of journalism, being in Washington there’s a lot of political base you can fall back on. I’m doing an internship this summer with a senator.
AcademicsIf you don’t actually join groups and make friends outside that dorm setting, then you don’t really feel as though your part of Georgetown and you can’t really enjoy it as much as you would otherwise be able to.
Student BodyDrinking is relatively easy on campus. The seniors and juniors pretty much provide the alcohol for the first two years. So for freshman and sophomores, they buy the alcohol, they have their parties in the townhouses and then you can come with the expectation that you do the same for the freshman and sophomores when you are a junior or senior.
The parties are relatively small but I guess you have that at every University.
I guess the major difference is the fact that in the morning you know you have to wake up and do work. Where as in a lot of other schools you can just go out and completely lose control and do whatever. But here you sort of always have in the back of your mind the fact that you have a term paper due in the next week or you have 7 page paper tomorrow.
