IntroductionIf you're looking for an easy place with a constant keg stand kind of party, Gtown isn't your school. However, I like to party.... a lot, but responsibly... I also do really enjoy learning from unbelievably intellegent (and VERY accessible!) professors (never TAs) but also a lot of learning via communication with everyone here. It amazes me how I can have an incredibly intellectual and rewarding conversation with my friends and some strangers at a coffee shop on campus, but then go right to talking about a sick party last night. There's no doubt that Gtown is word hard, play hard... but ACTUALLY... I'm not just saying it.
Campus Life and Social LifeBecause there's no Greek life, the social scene is very inclusive. Groups of friends form because of similar interests, not because of a sorority or frat pledge. Parties are hosted by student-run clubs and activities, and I know that sounds really dorky, but it's actually really great. It's much safer, because there's no shadiness to the parties-- you know who's house it's at, and you generally know the people you're with. You never have to pay to get into a party, and although sometimes it may be difficult for freshmen to find a place to be, once you do, it's SO much fun. We're also really into spontaneous dance parties.... it's not like a weird awkward party with just lots of people sitting aorund drinking. We have a damn good time. I also need to mention the madness that is the Hoya spirit-- especially basketball. We rock. and we know it. and we show it. and it's amazing. Oh and also, were In D.C.-- you can't beat that.
AcademicsAcademics are undeniably amazing. The most obvious are the programs in foreign affairs, languages, and economics and the such. But I'm an English major, and the course offerings are incredible for that too. There's even a theater program and major that is being built up and is amazing. All programs are extraordinary, but the ones that are given attention jsut happen to be exceptional, and unique to Gtown. Also, all classes are taught by professors, who are all VERY accessible and helpful. They really go out of their way to help every one succeed. I thought it would be a very competitive atmosphere, but it's not. Everyone's really chill about competition, there's no cutthroatness or anything. Professors also encourage students to communicate and learn from each other. It's a very unique quality to a school of such academic esteem. As far as work load goes, yes, it's hard at times, but it's always worth it. There's no busy work, so you're really working to learn. And overall, if you can manage your time and take yourself seriously enough, it's definitely manageable. And if it's not, there are a ton of resources to help you out.
Student BodyThe student body is actually very diverse. Sure, there are the stereotypical Northeastern WASP-types. But more than that, there is a diversity of personalities and interests--which comes out in student clubs and activities. And people really love to engage with people unlike them. It amazes me how different everyone is. I love sitting at a table in the cafeteria (which by the way, is not as bad as you may think... I actually have fun there) and listening to stories from people all over, with all different backgrouns. You have to know what kind of person you can be friends with, and you'll definitely find a good group of friends. The best of it is I think that a huge majority of the people here really want to be here, so everyone's enthusiastic about Georgetown and wants to make the most of it.
In Closing...It says here "Anything else you'l like to add?" .... well that's a hard question, because I love Georgetown more than I can explain in words. I honestly cannot imagine myself anywhre else. Everything about it, everything that contributes to the general atmostphere, is amazing. I was very picky about what I wanted in a school. I didn't want to be in the middle of nowhere, I wanted to be with cool people, I wanted an awesome school spirit, I didn't want to be scared that I would be raped when I went to a party, I wanted a stimulating but not competitive academic life, I wanted to be happy-- and Georgetown covers it all.
