Straight Up Grove City

Rating: 5/5 (16 ratings)
Introduction
I came to Grove City for generic reasons: because it was cheaper than any of the other private schools to which I applied. That said, I ended up liking the school a lot. It's not your typical "Animal House" environment, so if you like jello shots, puking, and lighting things on fire you should probably look elsewhere...

Campus Life and Social Life
Again, the party scene is pretty limited (at least in a typical college sense) but it exists. The stereotypical Grove City view of partying consists of ice cream socials, picnics, and bonfires. Which doesn't mean kids never drink - they do - it's just not a majority and the large Christian community here isn't exactly into breaking rules left and right, so the school is on the lookout to bust students for it.

Intramural sports are pretty big here, and some kids are rabidly obsessed and competitive about it. If you can handle that and can avoid taking yourselves and your team too seriously, you will have a blast. Varsity sports are in NCAA division 3 and the President's Athletic Conference (PAC).

As for other organizations on campus, there's pretty much something for everyone, and I recommend strongly getting involved in whatever clubs meet your interests (or starting a new one if you don't find what you're looking for) because campus life is pretty limited and without social outlets...it'll be a long few years here.

Having said that, many of the students who come from the area simply go home on the weekends, so the school does suffer a little bit from losing part of its community for two days a week...the kids who remain on campus do their best to keep everything fun and interesting, and when all else fails there's always Pittsburgh in a day-trip's-distance from school. Anything you want in a day out in the city - movies, restaurants, bars, clubs, museums - you can find there.

Academics
The professors here have been excellent, for the most part. Like any school, there are those few professors that make you cringe, but most are genuinely concerned for their students as individuals. A few professors I've had have really challenged me and encouraged me in my spiritual, as well as professional development. You won't encounter TAs here as replacement professors. Grove City is very committed to providing highly qualified educators.

Student Body
The typical Grove City student is white, middle class, and Christian. Most students come from Pennsylvania, but other states and regions are represented as well.

In Closing...
Grove City is a beautiful campus - even though we have some really crazy weather.
Your experience here will be what you make of it. If you have a negative attitude about GCC, you'll probably be miserable, but if you are a little bit proactive and get involved with something - sports, clubs, etc. - you will love your time here.
