Academic opportunities

Introduction
The reason I choose Harvard is just the academic opportunities and everything that’s attached to the name. I mean how can you turn it down. The government concentration has 4 subfields. American politics, Political theory, International relations, and Comparative government. And you can sort of pick which field you want to focus on, but if you want to take courses in various fields you can also do that as well. Another great thing about the government is a lot of classes that aren’t in the department per se you can take and get government credit.

Campus Life and Social Life
Freshman year a lot of classes where lectures, but junior and senior year you have many more small classes, so 2 government. I’m taking this semester are with 15 students and a professor. And that’s really helpful to sort of, you’re not just 1 out of 100. You get to know the professor and you get to dig deep into the subject and get 1 on 1 attention. A lot of freshman take a class called ec 10. It’s sort of an entry level economics course. And the professor is Martin Feldstein, who is very renowned in economics. He’s 3rd in line for the Fed, and will probably end up taking over for Alan Greenspan. It’s great to have a professor who has essentially written your textbook.

Academics
I think there are a lot of nerds on campus, but the thing is that’s not just what campus is. Again there are social people and there are people who are really, really fun and what you realize is people that were maybe conceived as nerds in high school, maybe come out of their shell in college and are really great and learn how to socialize much better.
I think one of the biggest differences at Harvard than other schools is that you make a choice between dedicating the majority of your time to extracurricular activities or academic work. And the extracurricular here are so serious that it does become a tradeoff down the line.

Student Body
The Primal Scream is basically when Harvard students act like Lord of Flies students is how I like to say it. They get naked and run around the yard. There are tourists there who take pictures and there are spectators there, Harvard students who may not want to take part in it. They say it’s one thing you have to do before you graduate from Harvard. I think what separates Harvard is the extracurricular activities and opportunities that you have that I just don’t think you have the institutional support at other schools.
