Dylan at Harvard?

Rating: 3/5 (59 ratings)
Introduction
The government concentration is something that provides me probably the most flexibility in terms of doing extracurricular activities, integrating other opportunities that Boston provides, but at the same time I’m very interested in politics, I hoping leaving school to get involved in some international development issues. I think the government concentration provides me at least a core knowledge in issues of government and political theory. At the same time it provides me enough flexibility to kind of broaden my curriculum and take a lot of subjects which is nice. I probably do about 30 hours/week or 40 hours/week.

Campus Life and Social Life
I am the director of the Harvard Concert Commission so we have an entirely student run, concert production team here, and been working on various shows. Brought Bob Dylan in the Fall. The mascot that we have now is like a 16th century pilgrim more or less. So he’s got the big hat and the shoes with the buckles on it that are shiny. I don’t think it inspires fear or does anything that a mascot’s supposed to do but I don’t know if Harvard really inspires fear in anyone so.
Academics
We had the best team in the Ivy Leagues this year. The football team was awesome, especially for Harvard vs. Yale. We impressed all the Yale students with our school spirit and our drinking ability too. The Harvard vs. Yale game is an incredible amount of fun and our football team killed Yale this year and finished off the season perfectly so.

Student Body
Harvard has these finals club. Despite what the administration refuses to recognize and something I think Harvard has struggled with and will continue to struggle with for a while is having a student social scene where there is large common spaces where people can hang out. We don’t have that right now, we don’t have a student center, there’s a lot of things that Harvard doesn’t have that other colleges do in terms of social life. So I think finals clubs to a certain extent take care of that. Or substitute for it. I know a lot of people think they’re an inadequate substitute but for the time being they’re kind of all we have so folks, that’s where late night is when the bars close at 1-2. And that’s where a fair number of folks hang out. Finals club are semi-secret I guess. All male oriented organizations and all female organizations. There are 8 male final clubs and 3 female final clubs. Certainly one of the most glaring problems with the finals scene is that women don’t have their own space on campus. Except for the Seneca, they just got an apartment over on Arrow St. that they’re using to the fullest.

In Closing...
It’s a place where 50-60 students kind of identify around a common institution. I think at Harvard it’s a nice way for people to find a community within Harvard. Folks tend to fragment themselves a bit and just exist in small social circles, so this provides so sense of identity in a personal community within Harvard.
