Hofstra - Visit Before You Decide!
IntroductionI would tell students that they should visit the school several times before making their final decision. Impulsive decisions lead to transferring out of your first choice of school because you do not know what it has to offer you. If the school you chose on an impulse does not have everything you thought it did, you will not stay. So, visit Hofstra two or three times, we have different programs throughout the year, and each one helps the student figure out what they want out of their education here at Hofstra. I chose Hofstra because it did have everything that I wanted out of a University. It had an amazing social life, great group activities, excellent professors with experience in their field, and an educational atmosphere I did not see anywhere else.
Campus Life and Social LifeCampus life is amazing at Hofstra. There is usually always something to do on the weekends. Sometimes people may go home and the campus population may vanish, but usally only the first month of school when people are getting use to living in a new environment and get homesick. But there are always partys going on somewhere on campus, if not in an off-campus house within a five minute walk of school. There are tons of intramaural sports teams on campus, allowing students to partake in different sporting events and not need to make the Division I teams. There are several clubs and bars and "hotspots" that students can also go to during the week, happy hour is a blast!

AcademicsThe academics here are really stellar. There are some professors everyone knows to stay away from, but then there are others that have their classes filled up within five minutes of them opening up for scheduling. The Communications Department and Business Departments are amazing here, they are the best I've seen out of any other school. The workload depends on the professor and how many credits you take a semester, but primarily for a student with 15 credits a semester, it is very easy to balance your work, activites, and free time.
Student BodyThe typical student here at Hofstra would be a Long Islander dressed in Abercrombie and Fitch. Although, there are many students who are not within this bracket, the majority of them are. Now, don't get me wrong, if you are not a student who shops at Abercrombie, Express, Armani, or Bloomingdales, don't worry, you'll be fine. You just won't be grouped into that "Hofstra Statistic" of being part of the Long Islanders over-running the campus. Most of our students are from the New York area, and a large percentage are from Long Island. But we have students hailing from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Texas, California, and international countries. We truly are a diverse campus with lots to offer every student that comes here.
In Closing...Hofstra really is an amazing school. It has so much to offer it's students, you just have to put yourself out there, and not shy away from the action. Make sure that the professors know your name and you aren't sitting in the back of the room never raising your hand.
