Hofstra: It Only Sucks a Little
IntroductionHofstra is unique because it's close to New York City, but still has the feel of a "campus" school and everything you'd want from a traditional college experience in terms of social life.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere are definately a lot of parties on and off campus, as well as bars in town and the unlimited social opportunities of New York.
Because Hofstra is still largely a commuter school, weekends can be desolate...you can find activities and parties, but it's not one of those schools where all students flock to the same two suites for an inclusive campus rager. It's more like: who do you know and are they up to some debauchery?

AcademicsHofstra is not ridiculously hard, but it does offer top-quality academics and plenty of challenge for those who want it. The professors are for the most part very knowledgeable and want all their students to succeed, so they take a very hands-on approach to their courses. No class is taught by a TA, though some professors employ them to help with discussion sections and papers. If you want extra help or projects, you will definitely find it here, and Hofstra offers an amazing tutoring program for those who want to enrich their studies.
Student BodyWhen students, especially those from out of state, show up at Hofstra, they expect a gaggle of rich, snobby Long Islanders who couldn't get into other schools. And yes, they do exist here in spades. BUT if you look at the student body, you will find just about every other type of kid here too...just keep an open mind. I recommend living in all-freshman housing your first year for a built-in social opportunity and easy access to great people.
In Closing...Beware the food: it's good, but limited in selection. Get a fridge.
